| From pictures that i see of other builds, most of the fire boxes have thick walls. So im guessing that you want your walls to be comprised of two sheets of metal with an air gap? I saw one build of a fire box where the two 1/4 inch metal sheets that comprised each wall of the fire box were separated by a 1 in air gap and at each outer edge of the two metal sheets, the sheets were connected and welded to 1 in square tubing. Some other smoker fire boxes i have seen look like they have much thicker walls in maybe the 2-3 inch range. What a good standard for the air gapped walls in the fire box? |

CWCW, the thick walls are insulated not just air. I am not saying some guys build them with just air but in my opinion they are wasting their time, material and money. If you are going to all the trouble of double walls then put some insulation in them. In most cases I see no real need in insulating a firebox unless you want to get all scientific. Build the firebox with at least 1/4" material and call it a day.
I hope this helps. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.
