Its been a long fall and early winter of house remodel, which Im still not done with, but I had to clear out the sheetrock dust and get some welding smoke back in my lungs. Been wanting to build a disco for as long as Ive seen the threads on here.
Was camping one weekend late last summer and my good buddy Mike (Wreckless) was texting me and giving me grief about how nice it would be to have that disco at the campsite. Of course I didnt have a disc yet, and he knew it. A few days later, the UPS man stops at the house, I start cussing under my breath because who knows what my wife has ordered this time. Wait, its addressed to me...WTH? No return address...WTH. Its heavy...its not ticking...ahh, what the hell, lets open it! One sweet disc inside the box...I start making some phone calls and finally get figured out where and who it came from.
Thanks Mike, an awesome gesture that I assure you wont go to waste!
So, this is what I started with, one really nice clean 20" disc
Im going with killswitch505's design (Thanks Denny) because it looks awesome and from what Ive been told, works like a charm everytime.
Had the boys at work shear and brake up my tray, marked it out and used the plasma cutter to get a good fit.
The side tray on, the ring on and all welded out. Just needed to break it loose from my saw horse and fill the center hole.
The center hole filled and sanded and all the other welds touched up.
I know what I want for handles, think I will just do some spring handles on it and I havent got them ordered yet. Soooo...I have aquired a couple old 18" disc recently and am going to build another disc for my buddy Jim. He is the owner of X2 on my backyarder build thread and his family and mine hang out alot and camp together alot. I figure I cant go wrong building this for him, because I will get invited to dinner alot
I wish Wreckless would have sent this one too, because it aint clean, and his was And if you notice, this one isnt round either.
After some much needed wire wheeling and cleaning on, I did the same process with this one. The side tray and wrapped the 1 1/2" strap around it. Not being round made it a little more "fun" to work with but wasnt as bad as I thought it might be.
I went ahead and welded the bottom of the ring on both mine as well, probably didnt need to, but I like the smooth look it creates. Here you can see the different shape of this disc.
So both done and cleaned up for now. I have a small sandblaster, and though Im not a huge fan of that thing, I think I will put it to use with these when Im done and get them good and clean before paint and seasoning.
Added some ownership symbols and the year. My dad has handed me down alot of cool old stuff that he has collected and built over the years and I always ask how old it is and when he built it. The same answer everytime..."if I would have been thinking, I would have dated it somehow" This way if my boys want these in the future, which Im pretty sure my oldest will, they will always know.
So, I need to get my handles lined out and work on the burner and stand. Hoping for some free time during the week to work on them more, but we shall see.
More to follow... _________________ X2 Finished Build

TrailerBuilder, They look great.
They should be perfect for camping.
Dating them was a good idea, who can remember everything.
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for the burner and stand. |

TrailerBuilder, Just a quick thought for you before you blast and paint.
I cut a V-shaped notch in the lip or mine and welded on a small piece of angle iron to make a spout of sorts.
It makes pouring oil, grease etc. out, a whole lot easier.
Some of it actually goes where I want it to now.
Just thought I would mention it now so you don't do it like I did, several months after the fact. |

I have nothing here bro...couldnt agree with you more...they do look good!!
Kurt_W, I dont think that these started out quite like that. It is just not a true round disc. I like the shape of it though, very unique for a disco.
Thank You Logtrucker
Chuck, I dont think you really need to be agreeing with Denny! Thanks for the kudos bro and no worries on the pics, wanted YOU to be the 1st!!
Thanks Maniac, why spend money on new ones when you can get old ones for free Both disc have some markings and numbers on them, Im hoping I can maybe get a year on them. _________________ X2 Finished Build

TrailerBuilder, I'll get some pics for you in the a.m., I don't mind sharing at all.
I never even would have thought of such a thing as a disco if someone didn't share it with me.
I'm not sure but Maniac and myself may have the only ones in the entire northeast. |

TrailerBuilder, here is the pics of what I was refering to.
Although it's not needed, I find it handy, but I like to deep fry in it.
Looking forward to updates. |

it is common to see the notched discs on plows worn almost completely round when used in fields with alot of sand in them. _________________ extra vinegar caint hurt |

So, FINALLY working on the disco again Work has been pretty hectic, which is a good thing, and the lawn care guys are wanting trailers for the mowing season right and left, again, not a bad thing. The oldest boys baseball practice is in full swing too, so its go go go right now
The kids were out of school with a 4 day weekend over Presidents day, so, the wife and I took some vacation time and spent the weekend at Table Rock Lake enjoying this view.
I really want to get to cooking on this disco, but how can a man turn down time with his family and staring at this for 4 days?
Anyways...
Got my stand build for one of the discs. Had been tossing around a couple different ideas on what to do here and really liked the way maniacs turned out on his build, so I went with a thought I had. My plan is to have the tank inside the stand and if I can pull it off with my sheet metal buddy, Im going to wrap 3 sides of the frame with stainless like I used on my X2 build for the shelving. Planning on cutting 3" off the stand to make it a better height for cooking, and will put a piece of expanded metal for the tank to sit on.
Had this 8" piece rolled at work for the burner setup. Added the plate on the inside for the burner to stand on.
Hole on the underside of the stand to access the bolt that holds the burner in place just in case
Used some black pipe I had laying around to roll a 2" strip to use for the space between the burner and the disc and also for a place for the disc to sit on.
Ring welded out and welded into its new home.
Just another shot.
Picked this up at Academy Sports for $13.
Burner sitting in its new home for a bit.
Well now I just need to finish this thing up and then bring the second one up to speed. Have everything for my handles, so that shouldnt take too long to do. Hope I can work out a deal on the stainless tomorrow, aka beer run Then some clean up work and some paint and some food in it.

TrailerBuilder, The stand is looking great.
Very nice design you came up with, looking forward to seeing more.
You are right, a man really couldn't pass up family time with a great view like that. |

TB That is one nice setup you have going on for the burner. I'm going to have to keep this in mind on my next build. Will have to see if there is any sch. 10 pipe at the shop. Stand looks sharp....with SS on it will put it in the next level. Time at the lake with the significant other is also a good thing....enjoy _________________ RF Smoker
