Raymond,
I like your smoke house! Cool
I have back/neck problems also, and know what you are going through. There is nothing like having a project staring you in the face every day that you can't work on because of pain. Wintertime is hard, but spring is around the corner and if you are like me things will start to get better. Wink
Take your time and get better, the smoker will be there when you are ready to finish it. I hope you get well soon bro and nice work on the smoker. Wink

Thanks for your comments. You know exactly what I am going through. After they do the Spinal Epideral injection I will be somewhat pain free for a month to three months. I will be able to tell how often they need to do the Epideral after my first one. They told me that it will improve my quality of life greatly. It is hard to sit around like you said but it is a must for me right now. We have not had any winter to speak of in Southwest Nova Scotia where I live. We had I believe two small storms that dropped maybe 2" each time and in a day or two it was gone again. Quite often we are above freezing. The winter has been crazy around here. No winter at all yet. Easy on the heating cost anyway.

Interesting concept. I also have a similar furnace that heats my house. My question is what kind of wood is the smokehouse built from? Also what is going to keep it from catching on fire or are you expecting the furnace jacket to prevent this?

I haven't had a chance to try it out yet other than burning some maple just to see how it worked. I put the pipe through the end of the smokehouse and made a couple of fires in it. I know it smells good inside, it smells like a maple smoke. The smokehouse shell is made spruce lumber that was stored on a rack in my basement. It is quite dry. I have thought about there being to much heat and I have a back-up plan in the event that there is to much heat. I have a stand already being made by a friend so I can remove the smokehouse and sit it on the stand instead. I have a steel barrel that I will gear up on top in the event that I need to remove the smoke house. Time will tell.

Hey Folks,
Here are a few more photos I had on my camera, the rest of the work that needs to be done on the smoker will be done as soon as my health permits. Friends have offered to finish it for me but I would like to finish it myself. I still need to get thermometers, and I need to construct a box to cover the pipe going into the smokehouse so no person can touch it and get burnt. I need to put on the chimney pipe on the roof also. I have that ready. I had the 5" chimney pipe and I made the damper and chimney cap myself. This spring I am going to pour a cement slab and add in four anchoring rings to secure the smoker to the slab. And also build a roof with open walls over top of the whole cement slab so I can put a picnic table on the slab. I am also thinking of putting insulation board on the outside this spring and covering it up with the same aluminium sheeting that I used for the roof. Thank you for looking and any comments or improvement ideas will be much appreciated.

Raymond, Very cool. Cool
I've never seen a setup like that, I hope everything works as you want it to.
Pouring a slab, building a roof, insulating, all from a guy getting a spinal epidural? Shocked Shocked
Good luck with your back and your build.
The only suggestion I have is make sure your exhaust is above the roof. Wink

I won't be pouring the slab, I will get my son to do that and to help build a roof over the slab. I already had the building material to build the smokehouse and the building material for the roof and open walls for the slab. I will need to put a longer chimney(exhaust) pipe on top of the smokehouse when the roof is built over the cement slab. I have enough 5" pipe for that also because of a modification that was done when I had my new furnace installed a few months ago. I started the build on January 5, 2012 and I still have some to do. It takes me awhile to get things done and right now I am on complete hold because of the darn back pain. I am going in on March 10 for the Epideral injection. I have heard it hurts like heck while they are doing the injection but once it is done it helps control the back pain a great deal. Some days I cannot even walk because of the back pain, I am actually looking forward to having it done. The doctor told me that my body will let me know when it needs the next Epideral injection. He said usually a month to three months and I will need another injection.
Thanks,
Raymond

I am planning on installing a 5" chimney(exhaust) pipe with a damper in this pipe, it is around 20" long. Will that be long enough for my chimney(exhaust) pipe?
Thank you,
Raymond

Hey Folks,
Here are a few more photos of the smoker.

I run a test with it Wednesday. I used a couple of 2lbs trout fillets. The temperature was fairly well controlled. Just take a little practice to get used to the BBQ/Smoker. The fillets turned out great. They were delicious. I gave one of the fillets to a friend and his family loved it. I forgot to take photos but am going to smoke some haddock fillets tomorrow. I will take some photos tomorrow. I now have to have my son pour a slab of cement for me and then anchor it in place.

I feel you on the back problems. I had a similar treatment where I had a series of three treatments of steroid shots into my back. I was in pretty bad shape when I went in. After the first shot I bent down and put my own shoes on for the first time in a month. It was amazing. Hope yours went as well as mine.

I really like your build. It looks like t will be a fish and jerky smoking machine. Do you mak e your own sausage? If not you may have to start. We need to see some food pics.
