I would be more than happy to try to answer your questions on the Backwoods cookers. I have an upgraded Party, a Fatboy, and a Competitor and can answer most questions on these cookers or the other larger cookers. I also compete on these cookers.

Ask your questions here or send me a note at stam@ccrtc.com

I don't have a backwoods but if I could buy any smoker I wanted at this point it would be the backwoods competitor or even the fatboy.

Old Dave, you are sooooo lucky Very Happy Three backwoods.

I have a friend with a spicwine, and he is very happy with it. If you are looking for a cabinet style smoker, I would also look into a Stumps. Most of the cabinet style smokers are very efficient fuel wise as well, and I would expect them to perform well in cold weather too! Very Happy

I know several people that cook on a variety of the different Backwoods styles. They all operate with the same principal.

Not familiar with the Spicewine, other than looking at the web site. Looks to be another fine cabinet style smoker.

The Stumps brand is also a very popular name with the addition of the gravity feed charcoal system. They too offer a variety of sizes for your needs & budget.

I think that they all are insulated, so that increases efficiency and improves all weather performance.

I have a Stumps, the advantage to the Stumps is that they utilize the gravity feed method of charcoal delivery. With the Backwoods or the Spicewine, the longest burn you will get is gonna be 4 hours. With the Stumps you can get a steady 24 hour burn without reloading the charcoal.

I would tell you to go to the Stumps forum, but it is down at the moment due to Stump updating the website. It should be back in action later this week. If not, a few folks will be having withdrawls.

If you want the charcoal basket model, they have those as well. Stumps also uses a higher temp insulation, that is why they hold such consistant temperatures. That also equals set it and forget it. I place my meat in the smoker, then insert a temp probe into the meat, close the smoker and I don't open it again until the meat is done.

I initially shopped all three. One of the other reasons I chose the Stumps is because it appeared they won more competitions based on forum posts. I only base that on posts that I have read. Not that I have read them all. Wink That had to count for something. Good luck on your choice.

It's really a shame when someone has to put up information on a forum that is not true to try to convince people toward one cooker or the other. You know, it would have been better for this gentleman to have posted what he liked about the Stumps cooker rather than posting false information on another cooker to try to make what he liked to look good.

It would be so easy to shoot this fellow down but this would put me at his level and I won't do that.

Again, be more than happy to answer questions on the Backwoods line of cookers and my info will be about Backwoods and not how bad any other cooker cooks as compared to the Backwoods or any other cooker.

All are good quality cookers. I'm sure that you will not be dissapointed with which ever cooker you choose.

Good luck with your search.

Old Dave,

I apologize for posting something that you did not agree with. Let me know what you think is incorrect and I shall correct it or delete it. I do realize this is a forum and we are all mostly stating our preferences and opinions. The manufacturers of these three fine smokers all post to this forum and I see Spice has already chimed in. If I post something you do not agree with in the future, feel free to send me an email and I will either qualify what I have posted or make a deletion.

I also realize we are all a bit passionate about our smoker of choice.

That said, I do think that the backwoods and the spicewine smokers are great smokers. Backwoods has been in the business for many years while spicewine is relatively new. I have talked to all three manufactures and would like to state that they all were very impressive and knowledgable about their smokers. I have also considered purchasing an additional backwoods for cooking chicken. I never said either was bad, I believe I just stated the qualities of the Stumps which I think should be recognized in this thread.

I believe all that I said was that the Stumps unlike the BW and SW utilizes the Gravity Feed, therefore longer burn times. I also stated that Stumps uses a higher temp insulation. If I am not mistaken, BW and SW use 1200 and 1000 degree respectively, while the Stumps uses 1400 degree. Correct me if I am wrong. I am only stating what was told to me by all three manufactures. I would also like to say that not one of those three placed their smoker above the others by bashing. I was quite impressed with all three. I just chose the Stumps for the reasons stated.

The advantages I saw with the Spicewine was that they have an awesome trailer mounted smoker that is insulated. That was quite impressive to me. They have been getting great reviews from posters at this site and many others. Had I needed a trailered model, Spicewine would have probably moved ahead of the others. Also they had great customer service when I inquired about their smokers. That is important to me when it comes to "peace of mind".

The thing I liked about the Backwoods was that they had a wider choice of models that should fit into anyones budget. I also liked that regionally, they were the lowest shipping costs to my neck of the woods. This would have been my first choice but did not come with the gravity feed. Also great customer service when I inquired.

Like I said, I just felt that Stumps should have been tossed into the mix. So I stated why. Wink

Tony,

I think Dave was referring to your very broad statement regarding the number of contest GC's won with Stumps Cookers vs others.

Yes I realize that now, after the fact of course. I must say "Point Taken" I have amended my first post to reflect as much.

Very impressive indeed.

I can see what leads us all to be so passionate about our particular smokers. Old Dave has quite a bit to be passionate about.

Dusty

Dave is one of the most generous and experienced contributors on this site. He made a very clear and valid point, and saw no need to beat a dead horse.

Tony figured out what Dave was saying after the fact. Tony edited his first post. If you did not see the unedited version, you have no place flaming Dave.

Regards--Jeff

I have a spicewine and love it!!
And as for the 4 hr cooking. Well, the coals will last 4 hrs and it will retain heat for several hrs more!!
And with the med it has a seperate coal door, so there is no temp loss from the smoker..
I went with the spicewine because after all the backwoods upgrades it ends up being alot more then the spicewine.
Look at the weight difference. Then decide with is better built.
My 2 cents..

I've been reading about each of the smokers discussed on this thread. I have one question, can I direct cook over the coals? Otherwords can I grill a steak?

Thank you,

Being a Stumps owner I can handle it Laughing I also looked at BW but I like the gravity feed system more, I cant tell you much other than that and I see no reason to start a mud sligging over who's smoker is better, I'm sure there all great. And Dave is a good man
