At the competition last weekend they were naming the top 10 finishes for all 4 categories. There were over 50 teams. I'm normally very impress when a team makes top 10 on more than one category, which is normal. But, at this one, there were at least five teams that walk on 3 categories and 2 that walked all four. One team took 3 top five finishes. I have never seen someone shine so much over such a big group of competitors. It's this something that just happen as a freak of nature or should I be unhappy with my performance until I accomplish this? I mean the odds of hitting top five on all four is like one in ten thousand.

I guess it depends on who the teams were and who they were competing against.

Hitting top 10 in all three is not uncommon at all. A cooker in Houston hit 3 1st's w/ 100 plus teams last month. He had a great day. What table you get on does play a part...a small one. But at the end of the day good bbq is good bbq. The cream will rise to the top..........most of the time.

It does seem to happen often. It always amazes me how ya dont know till the bitter end. 2 of our comps we only had 2 calls and finished 3rd and 4th overall. We were floored, figured since we didnt hear our name 5th thru 10th that we weren't in the top ten. On the flip side of the coin, our last comp we ended up with 4 calls, a 2nd, 3rd, 7th and 9th place calls and ended up 5th overall...talk about some stiff competition.

If you get walks (top 5) in all categories you should expect RGC or GC at most competitions.

When you can turn out top 5 in all categories the chances are slim that anyone else can do the same on the same day, if they do you are down to a tough day.

If you look at most competitors they may hit 3 of 4 (top 5) and take the GC, sometimes you can find someone that takes GC with a GREAT 1st place in one category, but doesn't get out of the pack on the others, the GC and RGC in KCBS is taken on the total overall score, if you are 20 points out in front in chicken, you can be 6 points back in ribs, pork and brisket, (6 x 3 = 18 points), and still take the GC by 2 points.

It's all in the numbers.

I understand that it could happen, I just thought about the mathematical odds of that happening to 5 teams on the same event. Specially when 90% of the participants are usual and regular competitors. 5 particular teams out of 50, 4 times. the lotto has better odds. there's no way this is a common occurrence with out a variable.

The variables are:

Experienced teams, Good techniques, Good pits that allow consistent results, Good rubs and sauces, and the biggest variable of all, a Great table of judges! Wink Laughing Wink

No, since there were about 10 teams that I see compete on a regular basis, a few of them that made final table on Pasadena (176 teams) just two weeks before, cooking on expensive well put together rigs (Stump, Pitt's and Spitt's, Gator, Klose, Pitmaker, Jambo), Two teams that just got back from kansas. Three teams that promote their own sauces and rubs, None of them made top 10. I don't think that lack of experience, reliable equipment, or seasoning was a variable. I'm leaning towards unspoken rules or standards that might have been different on this cook off compare to other cook offs.

Well that is weird then, as if it was a sanctioned contest the reps should have been all over weird stuff if they saw it.

It was a TGCBCA cook off, I normally do IBCA or Metro.
I was talking to another team today, and they claim that all the winners were also board members and their friends, which (if true) it will make this whole issue a different story, and since I'm not a member of the association or compete on their cook off on a regular basis, I shouldn't get involved on.
Thank you guys for all your input. I guess I should aim to get top 5 on all categories anyways. It might be hard to accomplish, but the trying is the fun part.

Some teams use similiar flavor profiles and if the same judges judge each category those teams will score well in each category. Also if some cooks are doing comps every single weekend, they can be a little more fine tuned than some that only cook once a month or less often. Personally I have done several cooks with all top ten or even top 5 finishes, and the very next week, not even a final table call. I gave up worrying about "what did I do wrong this cook" and now say "go get them next time". Who knows what to think of it.

Butchers BBQ had a comp like that this past spring.

They took first in three meats, and GC overall. The event had over 80 teams.

Sometimes when your on your on.
