Bark maybe, but surely there are leaves also, even if they are on the ground. It also may help if you can post a picture of the buds if there are no leaves.

Unfortunately most of them have no leaves left , and the ones on the ground are too mixed up from the wind to definitively decide which tree they are from Sad

There are many trees out there , just looking out the window I can see well over 100 trees over 3" diameter and that is just a small fraction of whats out here on 40 acres.

Post your pictures of the bark and trees and include as many different types of leaves as you can find. That way we can at least tell what they might be, who knows we may be able to tell you exactly what they are.

This might help.

Looks like hickory to me.

Get ahold of a local arborist or a fire wood guy they will know.

Check the leaves next spring and get the Leafsnap app on your I-Phone. It actually works, used it to identify a butternut tree for a coworker last week.

Teleking

I will have to keep that in mind , I would like to know what they are here pretty soon before I cut them down... I am hoping to run across some Black Cherry , if I do then it will remain a smoker only wood rather than go into the wood burner , I have looked at pix of the bark of BC , but , I am still unsure what this is.

Cherry is typically a darker brown bark and less gray than what your pictures show.

The bark is actually darker than it appears in these pix , i will try to get some others when it quits raining , there are some that the bark is almost black.

If they are slated for the chain saw you will know when you cut it based on color alone.

Ok , I will knock one of them down and submit a pic of the wood itself.... I have some other stuff that smelled really sweet when I was cutting it up into wood burner size , I will have to try and locate that too..

thanks

Cliff

Cool , thanks ... especially since the top of that one is already "seasoned". I believe I shall apply the chainsaw to that one in the very near future Surprised there are at least a dozen others close by , I believe I shall re-orient a couple from vertical to horizontal for the winter Very Happy

well I went and cut a couple smaller trees down today , their bark was the same as the one above that is black cherry ... it sure seems like BC by the wood and the aroma when cutting it ..... there are many more as I walk thru the woods , so , I think I shall relieve some of the smaller ones of their vertical-ness Smile and let them sit in the garage until spring.

as luck would have it a friend of mine brought me a piece of BC that is about 4ft long and 18" diameter , it has been down since last year , i cut some slabs off of it and busted them up into chunks to use for now...

now I jsut need to locate a supply of Apple...

I'm no arborist, but, from 12 years of logging...I'll vote it's a Black Birch. Hence the sweet aroma.

Should a reddish heart & be stringy as an old witch's hair...miserable to split.

BTW..In MY opinion, birch ( we have yellow & black), ain't worth a crap to cook on, TOO aromatic...Birch makes a beautiful fire, but, I don't even like to burn it in the woodstove too often due to the "smell"...but, that's just me...

I assume you are talking about the second pic being black birch, correct?
