After suffering thru some CRAPPY charcoal last winter, ( Stunk like a goat's butt...{{don't ask Embarassed}} .. the food did too. I checked the bag..."made in Argentina" Shocked )

I found a supplier of this, made 60 miles away ( Brookville,PA) nice stuff!! runs $6.95/10 lb.bag. I see they have 44lb. bags ..cheaper per lb.

now I'm Very Happy Very Happy

That looks like good stuff, and you're happy with it.Smile

Man, I gotta make me a trip across the border.

Not a lot of selection for lump up here,
unless you want to pay a premium price.
One store must mark it up more than I'd care to imagine. Crying or Very sad
Thanks for sharing Frosty.

I might consider making my own with a buddy after reading this thread.

Just local "northern hardwoods". I can pick out a lot of oak in it, some, I can't tell the species. But being only 60 miles from me, I know what the timber stands are around here. I'm very sure they purchase log truck loads of low grade lumber/logs.

Very good smelling when it burns Wink

Humphrey lump is great stuff--it too is my "go to" lump. It's a step up from Royal Oak (IMO) and several steps up from Cowboy and the generics at the supermarket.

My only complaints are that the hardware store I buy it from marks up the price quite a bit (it was over $1/lb. at one point), and sometimes I get a bag that has been kicked around a lot in transit and has a bunch of small fragments and dust at the bottom. I expect some dust and small chips, but some times it looks like the bag was dropped down a flight of stairs or something. Probably the hardware store's fault as they store the charcoal in the basement and carry it up and down the stairs by hand.

I would like to try the natural briquettes, but I haven't seen them around here yet.

Warminster is a bit out of the way, but I've been hearing so many good things about the BBQ Guru, I think I'm gonna make a trip out there some time soon. Cool Hopefully they'll have some of the briquettes so I can see how they perform in the WSM.

My go to charcoal right now is Mali's. I've gone through about 3 - 4 20lb bags of it and have not been disappointed once by it.

Frosty, it's too bad you aren't out west, we have some really good suppliers out here in Vancouver. You are in the heart of some great hardwoods, go to a farm and ask for a chunk of maple.

..."made in Argentina"

That might seem strange at 1st, but "Wicked Good" lump
(which really is that good, also that expensive !!) is, I think,
mostly "made in Argentina"
At least any of it I've had is.....

Wicked Good uses a blend of 5 South American hardwoods. They also sort their product so there is little chance of any foreign materials.

I am lucky to have a retailer close by but I still pay $18/22 lbs.
