Sorry, I can't figure out how to do this {url} stuff.

Local arborist has got wood for free. I want to get wood, but not sure what is OK for smoking.

Looking at a pile like this what do I want to avoid? This is N. CA and I know what eucalyptus looks like (avoid).

Any advice?

Thanks,
John

OK, so I look on each piece of wood for a label, and compare to your link. Thanks, very helpful.

Sorry, guess it was a dumb question to begin with, how to approach a wood pile of unknown makeup to get useful smoking wood.

From what I can tell from the pic, it looks like oak. Why not ask the guy to show you what oak looks like and go from there?
It's green, so you will have to let it dry before you can use it.
Split it, stack it where it won't get wet and forget about it for at least 6 months to a year.

If you have trouble starting your fire so may be unseasoned or green wood, is extremely frustrating and disappointing it all thing depend depending upon when it is cut down.
