Really do not add anything in there unless they are freezing

Luckily nobody was hurt and it didn't set my house on fire...

Shocked Shocked

Glad no one got hurt.

I might suggest 2 metal trash cans, one with the lid painted red one with the lid painted blue. Fill the red lid one until full, put the blue lid on it once full. When the red one is full again, dump the blue one. Repeat.

Oooops!!! That's why I use a galvanized trash can for coals. Doesn't matter if they are hot or not. Glad to hear you and your family are okay.

Perhaps I'll say that I couldn't see the disclaimer that said "Do not add hot coals" Cause it was so dark in the morning? Think that'll work?

Just set it on the curb for trash day and see what they do with it. Curious to see whether they would take it as trash or attempt to empty and set it back on the curb.

Good laugh either way...

I'd have to make sure I was home from work that day because with my garbage men I can assume they'd empty it Smile

When the city asks if you didn't read the "Do Add Hot Coals" sign, ask them to point it out to you (unless it's on the lid).

Yep. Whole thing painted RED. I don't empty it unless it's been over 10 days since last coals added. Embers can smolder a long time!

A gentleman in my neighborhood did that several years ago. Only his can was in the garage and he ended up destroying most of his house. No one hurt, but a complete gut of the house and de-smoking was required.

wow...I thought I was the only dumb one that did this. Shocked. No worry, everyone does dumb things in life and learned my lesson. I too have a city plastic owned trash bin and this wasn't on my UDS because the coals go out pretty quickly on that but on my old Brinkman water smoker.

With the wsm, it is just a pan of ash and coal and thought after two days would be put out. Course there is still oxygen that goes underneth it and down at the top. Wasn't until I noticed many days later there was a 3 inch hole at the bottom. Nothing severe but wish I didn't do that! I should repair it but not worth calling the city and having to buy a new trash can.

With my UDS I can close any oxygen to it and only will dump the ashes from the pan attached to the bottom of the basket so can reuse the fuel that's left in it and the ashes are cold without worry.

The smell of burning plastic must have been god awful. Glad no one got hurt.

We've had our share of (non-bbq) related visits by the local fire department.

Luckily the smell of charcoal and wood burning out matched the plastic but yeah it was nasty.

easy solution. find the neighbor you don't like. wait till they go to work on garbage day. swap your can for theirs. point of warning, i'm probably not a very good neighbor so this advice may be tainted.
