two weeks ago, I went to STL (120 miles away) to buy some mesquite
http://stlouis.craigslist.org/bfs/2349973198.html

the deal fell thru after I already drove 50 miles. so I got on CL and hooked up with a truckload of apple
http://stlouis.craigslist.org/for/2366397298.html

on that trip I visited Pappy's
http://www.thesmokering.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=514105&highlight=#514105

In the morning, I'm making my second attempt at the mesquite. and I will be getting some UDS barrels
http://stlouis.craigslist.org/for/2375815161.html

I WANT to go back to pappy's but it's a 45 minute line on a normal weekend so we are not even thinking about it this weekend.

I was about to say we were going to Smokin Joes but getting a link to it, I see they closed.

just now, surfing for an alternative, I find Bogart's smoke house. opened and run by the chef at pappy's.

I guess that will be our lunch.

I am not sure what its like out East but here in the West the city empties on long weekends.
I would be back at Pappy's in a heartbeat if it were me. But i look forward to your review and pictures if you venture else where.

We survived the trip but every part of the trip was not as planned. (well, the UDS drums were good)

We met the guy with $100 worth of mesquite was supposed to have a half an S10 load. he had about 150-175 lbs. that is still a deal but not the deal I thought I had.

then the wife came along so we called Pappy's to see if they were busy. they said it was a normal Sat. we went there and the line went 70 feet out the door. we didn't feel like standing in line for 1.5 hours so we went to bogarts. another line out the door. My wife wanted Japanese so I googled one up and we headed for that. they were closed for renovation.

we were then close to the 55 gallon drums so we did that (got 4 $15 each w/lid and locking ring). they were from Brazil and hauled juice to a dairy farm. they had a plastic bag inside each barrel filled with juice then they were frozen. they are CLEAN and come with the hand locking lock rings.

he told us about applebees down the street so we were out of choices and HUNGRY so thats what we ate.

I had three CL weber grills I was interested for UDS donor lids.
all of those deals fell thru.
we stopped by a produce market and it was a farmers market and it was over.

I took my filipina wife to the international grocery store and we stocked up on $150 of filipino food.

the holiday and bad pre-planning messed up alot of the plans but I think I came out ahead.

I've been to Pappy's once prior to a Cards game last summer. Agree that the food is great, the the wait is a bummer. We got there right when they opened and had to wait 40 minutes just to place our order.

Just wondering... Does Pappy's offer phone in orders that can be picked up for carryout? I'd be fine phoning in an order for carryout and sitting in a parking lot so I didn't have to bear the long wait.

they do carry out. The wait is the fire code problem. once you get to order, your food is 2 minutes away

From downtown St. Louis you were only 15 minutes from Mike "The Legend" Mills' place, 17th Street BBQ. It's in O'fallon, Il and for my money better than Pappy's.

Give it a shot next time you're in "The 'Lou". Smile

Cheers,
Braddog
