How long will wood keep if its off the ground and covered? Will it ever become too old or dry? I'm a newbie and I've got a plentiful supply of wood and need to get it cut and stacked so it will be ready for next year when I finally get to purchase my smoker I've been saving for.

Years!

When it gets too old is if you let moisture or rot into it.

If it gets too dry it just burns hotter and faster, so you burn more of it.

Try and keep wood away from the walls of any structures, by at least a foot, and 6" - 8" off the ground, and well ventilated, and that's pretty much it.

Plenty of ventilation, avoid building stacks in deep shadey spots, don't put impermeable covers over the whole pile, and I would also put a vapor barrier under your stacks to keep rising damp from the wood...

Cheers!

To reiterate. Don't "cover" it, as in fully covered.... just keep a top on it so rain doesn't get to it, yet fully allows ventilation. Otherwise, all that moisture underneath can't evaporate and stays trapped/condenses and and mold/rot soon follows.

How long will it last? How long does it last in a dry environment like a house framework or furniture? Indefinitely.
