So it's good to know that when making hardwood charcoal you've got to burn off the water
I used to get his newsletter, huffpo can have him. |

That article is either poorly proofread or downright mistaken.
It mentions 'mineral charcoal' as an ingredient in Kingsford - there ain't no such thing! Mineral coal is listed as sub-bituminous (a nice aphorism for lignite) in the Kingsford blue bag briquettes in both Weber cookbooks and on TVWB web site.
Weird how Duraflame and K-Comp are listed but Royal Oak Ultra 100 briquets, Stubb's briquets, and OCC Rancher / Trader Joe's briquets are notably absent in the report. The statement that such natural briquets are not readily available is bunk since Lowe's carries Stubb's briquets everywhere they have a store AFAIK. Even weirder is the lack of mention of Stubb's yet Duraflame briquets are mentioned, since they are both manufactured by Cowboy and AFAIK have identical bag contents in terms of composition.
I wonder how much Meathead got from Kingsford to write that report?
Can't trust nothin' from someone who disses stickburning and avoids mesquite (per his own 'Zen of Wood' article). Obviously there are deficiencies in fire making and fire management if stickburning in general is to be avoided and mesquite shunned. The k.a.m.'s know what I'm talking about I'm sure! _________________ Let's hope SoEzzy can ditch his heavy hand on photos in 2016!
