Anyone have any suggestions for a cheap charcoal grill?

I've got a gasser and a UDS that cover about 90% of everything I want to cook when I'm outside. However, I'm not really happy with kabobs or steaks on the gasser, and I think I'd be happier with a charcoal fire for those two. I don't plan on using it much, so it'd have to be cheap to justify the expense. My needs are simple though. I'm just looking for a grate that can either get real close to the coals for steak, or come off for the kabobs.

You know, the thrift store is probably where I should look. Maybe Craig's List.

According to amazon, the 18.5 inch weber kettle is like $70, and that's more than I'm looking to spend.

Definitely check out your local Craig's List. I just scanned the Boston CL and in the last 5 days there were roughly 10 Weber kettles put up priced between $10 and $25...

Cheers!

Hell those are pricey by standards here in PDX but reasonable nonetheless.
Offer $30 and I bet they accept. Wink

Agree with BluDawg on the Sportsman, I love mine. They are bigger than you think and dont bother with the cover..it's cast iron and don't leave out in rain...
You can get an unseasoned one for less..

I just picked up a used 22" Weber kettle from local CL for $20. I've scrapped 2 of these for UDS but I'm gonna keep this one for grilling.

Keep in mind Dr Obvious once you start cooking with charcoal your gasser just might find the curb, although the grill in your avatar looks like a Weber gasser (Q series) and I cant imagine anyone throwing one away. Let us know what you get but I reccomend a Weber kettle too, they're the benchmark for all grills.

Well, the gasser is a different beast. When I get home from work, the gasser is quick and simple as using a conventional stove. Charcoal produces a better result, but if I get home at 6:45, I don't want to wait as long as charcoal takes to make dinner.

I ended up giving the Q to a friend of mine (as a thank you for some work he did for me). It's a great little grill, but I wanted better offset control, a larger cooking surface, and a rotisserie. I ended up getting a Weber Genesis, and have been very happy with it.

I've settled on a weber kettle.

I've seen this stated MANY times as a reason for gas, but I don't understand it. When you get home, dump some charcoal in a chimney starter. It takes less than a minute. Then go inside to wash up and prep the food, and the charcoal will be ready when you get back outside.

Good choice.

I'd have a tough time pushing a $500-600 grill to the curb myself.

With the weed burner, I have clean grates and a fire going in less than 5 minutes. I doubt you can have a gasser up to speed that fast and you get teh better results too.

I have this grill. On Mother's Day I couldn't get our gas grill to work, used it as an excuse to finally try charcoal grilling. I didn't want to spend a lot on something I may or may not like so I grabbed this one. The one I have says its by master forge. Not the best of build qualities, but I wasn't expecting that from a 40 - 50 dollar grill. So far its worked pretty dang well, and I'm really happy with it. I'm hoping it'll last me a couple of years and then I'll be ready to move onto something else.

Let me just add that I am now addicted to charcoal.
