Has anyone ever gotten a used oak whiskey barrel and chopped it up to use for smoking? I was at my neighbors place the other day and she has a used Jack Daniels barrel. She is going to take the rings off the barrel for some other project. I am thinking of taking the wood to use for smoking.
This is my first post so please be nice!! My story is posted in the introduce yourself section. |

| They make charcoal out of them, so somebody thinks so. |

Yes, it is great! We add a little bit when grlling hamburgers and steaks.
Got a bag of JD barrel chunks, the first year we cooked at the Jack. |

Are you saying that they sell chunks of used barrel wood? If so, then I should be ok to used the barrel that my neighbor has. |

I don't know about the barrel chunks raw, but they sell their own brand of charcoal made from old Jack barrels.
As long as nothing else has been stored in it, I don't think it would hurt to. |

No, the chunks we got were rom a whiskey barrel that been cut into chunks.
Not sure if the sell it, they gave a bag to every team that was competing that year. Really would like to get some more.
BQQer's Delight sells JD pellets, might be a good replacement. |

Yes, they sell them. I got a bag of these on a lark one time when I was at the hardware store. They worked pretty well. Def. had a spicy/vanilla scent like you'd expect from whiskey. Good with burgers like Raine said. _________________ Real eyes realize real lies |

| You could call the General Store in Lynchburg and see where you can get it. |

using wine barrel staves is normal http://www.amazon.com/Steven-Raichlen-Best-Barbecue-Bundles/dp/B0007ZGUWA and the jack daniels wood chips are costly but real good for grillin steaks. I wanted to break up a JD barrel. we get free oak around here. I want to try that before I buy the barrel. the barrels and chips smell like booze but the smoke is just oak. the little bag of chips is like $7. I use 3/4th of a bag when I have guests over and I'm cooking steak. _________________ It's all about the smoke!
