I found a great place to buy my firewood for smoking. This is a load of seasoned hickory I bought for $50. I could have had more. I had to tell them to stop. It’s Gass logging company in Pinckneyville, IL.
I had bought some hickory from a guy on craigslist. He charged me $25 for a level, contractors, size wheel barrel full of hickory. When I tried to make a larger purchase he said that he bought the wood in southern Illinois and was resells it. So, I started searching the web for firewood in southern IL and found Gass. I can’t believe how much I got for $50. They loaded it with a conveyor. All I had to do was spread it around in the back of the truck. They said also supply the wood some major BBQ joint’s near St. Louis. Said they only use green wood at those places. They gave me some samples of cherry, pecan and sassafras to try out. I will definitely be going back there again. If you live in southern IL and need wood. I can give you their number.

LOL!!! Nice haul. Last winter, I picked up some firewood from some guys on the east side of Des Moines, and one dude asks, "Do you got a smoker?". I said, "Yes". Then, that old fart sniffed every log before throwing it in the back of truck. Every once-in-a-while, he'd yell "Apple!" or "Cherry!" and throw the log in the cab of my truck. It was hilarious...he filled up the whole passenger side. Very Happy

there is a saw mill in Cowden, IL.
they have slab wood from trimming logs.
looks like this

if you drop off a car trailer and pick it up 2 days later, they load you with oak and hickory for free. or you can just go and load yourself.
half my neighborhood is heating thier houses with it.

I asked my neighbor. it sounds like it's only a pre-load deal. the mill doesnt want people going in and loading/leaving a mess that they then need to clean up. If someone pisses off the mill, everyone is out of free heating wood. you drop a trailer, come back in a couple days and pull it out loaded. I need some and it's only 5 miles from me and I have a car trailer. If you want to get some, I can haul a load to my house.
