Does anyone have any idea of a big box store that carries File Powder? I have looked all over hell for it and cant find it. I can order online but they want as much to ship it as they want for the dang spice. Any help would be appreciated.

I would think as far north as you are, it would be difficult to find it in any store. Online is probably your best bet.

SO - Whatcha making with it??? Cool

Call the nearest store to you and see if they ship first class, if not ask them to. Or ask em if they will ship it Priority small flat rate box.

I have to get it at butcher shops here. Ones that specialize in seafood and southern cooking. If you see crayfish you're in the right place...

I typically see it labeled as "Gumbo File" from the better known spice companies you see in most stores.
I bet a health food store might just have it someplace in their conglomeration of stuff. any of those near you?

I finally found it in store as gumbo file powder. I am using it in a new rub blend I was working on. Finally got the rub finished and will put it to use this weekend on some butts. Will keep you all posted.

Ingredients
5 tablespoons kosher salt
6 tablespoons paprika
10 tablespoons dark brown sugar
3 tablespoons file powder (powdered sassafras leaves)
2 tablespoons ground dried thyme
2 tablespoons dried dill weed
2 tablespoons dried oregano
2 tablespoons dried basil
2 tablespoons ground black pepper
10 tablespoons garlic powder
10 tablespoons onion powder
1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
2 tablespoons dry mustard powder
2 tablespoons ground allspice
2 tablespoons ground dried sage
Directions
1.Stir together the salt, paprika, brown sugar, file powder, thyme, dill, oregano, basil, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, mustard, allspice, and sage in a bowl until evenly blended. Store the rub at room temperature in an airtight container.
2.To use: liberally coat pork butt or brisket with some of the rub, massaging it into the meat. Wrap tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 24 hours. Smoke meat as you normally would.
