Going to blow some Lowes gift cards on a Weber 22.5" and other then the ash catcher and the hinged grate (my neighbor will give me a free hinged grate) is their any other difference? It is worth the extra $60 for that ash catcher?

Heading out in about 30 minutes to fire up the smoker for it's first run of the year.

troutnut787, my vote is no, it's not worth it.
I don't own one so maybe some others will chime in.
I used an oil drip pan under an el cheapo that I used to have. $5 at your local auto parts store.
YMMV

Having owned both a silver and a gold I must say I like the convenience of the ash catcher, but I got a special deal at Target and only paid $95 for my OTG, otherwise I would have bought another silver(it was a return, all that was missing was the push nuts that hold the wheels on the axle). Pretty much hands off ash cleanup with the OTG. I would also recommend buying a second coal grate, place it at a right angle to the other grate and small lit pieces of lump are less likely to fall through.

Trout its a tough call...you can accomplish the same thing with a bucket but the lock-in ash catcher stops hot embers from falling out on your deck.

I prefer the ash catcher...but if I were to spend an extra 50 bucks I'd spend the extra 200 and get the performer with the lid holder, charcoal bin, propane ignitor, side table etc. Wink

I have one of each. The OTG was $30 on CL with lid and utensil holders and cover. The blue OTS was FREE at the transfer station. A co-worker just scored a OTS for $15 on CL yesterday. I would check CL and spend the gift cards on other goodies and BBQ supplies.

Of the two I use the OTG the most for the ash catcher.

Cheers Wink

Edit:

Here is a OTG with cover for $50 in my neck of the woods:
