gaining access to the system directory (remove crapware apps, backup installed apps)
gaining access to the boot loader (allowing you to flash a new rom or back up your current image)
run root requiring apps (including titanium backup to backup your data to your sd card, tether apps, http://www.appbrain.com/search?q=root)
Overclocking (haven't tried this) or changing the drive format to a non-blocking format (only needed for Samsung devices, I think)

Ok i am with you on all of that and i am asking questions basically so i understand things better.
Boot loader, what is it and or how does it work?
Removing apps so battery life is extended is one of the things i have in mind, possible or not?
The wife looked at the shipping list(ordered online) it comes with a 32GB mini SD card. I havent looked but can i get a bigger one and what is the size of the OS?
And here in Portland they dont have the 4G system up and running yet, what would the difference in speed be between the 3 and 4G systems? _________________ #3 LIAR

Here's some apps I need;
(1) Notify me when USPS mail is in the mailbox app
(2) Notify me when the washer or dryer is finished app.
(3) Notify me when Jehovah's Witnesses are at the door app. (Use this in conjuction with the turn on the water sprinkler app.)
(4) Notify me when my neighbor wants to borrow more of my tools app. This should invoke the "I'm not home" app.
You know... practical stuff. |

No need here for such stuff. I pay $27 per month(including taxes) for my voice only plan I've had for over 7 years. I figger that leaves me at least $60-$80 a month more to buy meat and cooking toys. _________________ I was taught to respect my elders. It's just getting harder to find them.

1) Bootloaders.
Before anything runs on your mobile phone the bootloader runs, the bootloader is phone or system specific and often relates to the chipset and motherboard in your phone, the manufacturers want you to run their firmware, and they have set up code that will 'brick' the phone, (turning a perfectly viable phone into a useless piece of plastic and metal).
You need to unlock the bootloader, or the code inside the bootloader will brick your system when you try, and flash the ROM, flashing the ROM before unlocking the bootloader, may "brick" the phone.
2) Removing Apps clears space that your can then use for other things, to a limited amount that saves battery life, but in reality having a program that kills the apps you aren't using is much more useful IMO. Lots of Apps sit running in the background wasting energy, you can save the energy by not having them running at all, but you are really creating space more than saving battery life.
3) Phones have limits on their card size, they will often come with the biggest card in them, if you are paying a premium rate for the phone, if the phone is on a special cheap price then they will often have a lesser card 1/2 or 1/4 the max card size.
4) 3G is about 1/4 as fast as 4G, or 4G is about 4 times as fast as 3G.
You don't have it there now, but it's better to buy the capability now, and then have it work when it comes on line, than not buy it now, and have to pay to upgrade your phone when it comes online in 6 months time and you still have 18 months before a free upgrade.

She wanted the upgrade now. She wasnt convinced of the 4G but after talking to a Verizon store salesman she was convinced. I am waiting as i want to see what other devices will be released going into the holiday season. I will test the phone as to whether or not i can drop my cable net service. I am actually pretty excited about her getting the phone so i can have something new to play with. _________________ #3 LIAR

SoEzzy- the best of my knowledge, none of the phones sold in the US have boot loaders designed to brick your phone, just to prevent changing anything on them. Bricked android phones are actually quite rare. It is more common that it is just hard to unlock them.
I think we'll just have to agree to disagree on the task killer front. Here's a post that sums up the against side (and this jives with my own personal experience and the experience of some devs I know)

Got the Thunderbolt in my hands and looking through the extensive marketplace for the apps.
Got one question about 1 of em. Memory booster, is it worthwhile, its free.
Lot of new stuff to learn.
The one annoying thing is that Pandora wants access to a bunch of info that is not pertinent to using their app. I do have a paid subscription to Pandora on the 'puter is there any way to get around the app wanting access to the info? _________________ #3 LIAR

Oregon - according to the good folks at XDA, memory booster looks to be another type of task killer. It will make your system go faster.... or force close your apps and give you a black screen requiring a hard reboot. I would suggest only installing it if you really need it, and with the thunderbolt, I would be surprised if you do.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=718090&page=3
Pandora - Well, this applies to apps in general - Unfortunately, there is no mechanism for developers to specify *why* they want access to particular data. It would be nice if you didn't have to have a strong understanding of the platform and computer science in general to decipher what this all means.
For well known apps by reputable orgs (and Pandora is one), you can be more forgiving. For unknown apps by unknown orgs, I'm much stricter on permissions. FWIW, I have pandora on my phone and have no concerns.
I'll do my best to break down what Pandora wants access to, and why:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.pandora.android&feature=search_result
NETWORK COMMUNICATION
FULL INTERNET ACCESS
Allows an application to create network sockets.
This is required to stream music
CREATE BLUETOOTH CONNECTIONS
Allows an application to view configuration of the local Bluetooth device, and to make and accept connections with paired devices.
This is probably to play music over your bluetooth headset or headphones
YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION
READ CONTACT DATA
Allows an application to read all of the contact (address) data stored on your device. Malicious applications can use this to send your data to other people.
ADD OR MODIFY CALENDAR EVENTS AND SEND EMAIL TO GUESTS
Allows an application to add or change the events on your calendar, which may send email to guests. Malicious applications can use this to erase or modify your calendar events or to send email to guests.
These two look like a stickler. In fact, this is to let the app identify your contacts that also use pandora and match you up. See here
PHONE CALLS
READ PHONE STATE AND IDENTITY
Allows the application to access the phone features of the device. An application with this permission can determine the phone number and serial number of this phone, whether a call is active, the number that call is connected to and the like.
It stops playing music when you get a call
SYSTEM TOOLS
MODIFY GLOBAL SYSTEM SETTINGS
Allows an application to modify the system's settings data. Malicious applications can corrupt your system's configuration.
Needed for the following permissions, I think
PREVENT DEVICE FROM SLEEPING
Allows an application to prevent the device from going to sleep.
BLUETOOTH ADMINISTRATION
Allows an application to configure the local Bluetooth device, and to discover and pair with remote devices.
CHANGE WI-FI STATE
Allows an application to connect to and disconnect from Wi-Fi access points, and to make changes to configured Wi-Fi networks.
CHANGE NETWORK CONNECTIVITY
Allows an application to change the state of network connectivity.
Wifi state and network connectivity are probably to keep your wifi from falling asleep and thus pushing you over to 2/3/4g connection. This is a good thing
Show all
NETWORK COMMUNICATION
VIEW NETWORK STATE
Allows an application to view the state of all networks.
VIEW WI-FI STATE
Allows an application to view the information about the state of Wi-Fi.
SYSTEM TOOLS
AUTOMATICALLY START AT BOOT
Allows an application to have itself started as soon as the system has finished booting. This can make it take longer to start the device and allow the application to slow down the overall device by always running. _________________ Real eyes realize real lies |

If you have various key tags or cards for stores like CVS, Shoprite, etc this is an essential one:
http://www.mycardstar.com/
I believe it is free as well. Also runs on the iPhone, Windows phones, Blackberry and some new Nokias....... _________________ Pat

I don't mind doing a FEW things on line using my DROID (Incredible) but it is just too small to use it 100% of the time for internet use.
BUT......now my XOOM tablet (verizon) is a different ball game altogether. I LOVE using that for internet use. I have the 5G plan ($50) and use my in home router when I am at home and WI-FI when I can find out out and about to keep from using my 5G....not that I would ever get close to using 5G _________________ Where rumors end and legend lives forever... |

Thanks Dr O!
I have been reading some of the various forums for the android platform. Just tons of info to pour through. I am not going to root the phone for now until a get a better grasp of how the thing works.
I did DL the Angry birds app, and i ran down the battery after doing so.
Only drawback is the battery life, but focking cool technology in my hands.
Anyone used chrome 10.1? _________________ #3 LIAR

To help save battery life I turn off any apps that do not need to run in the back ground....GPS, bluetooth, WI-FI are a few that I can think of that if not turned off when not in need....drain your battery pretty quickly. _________________ Where rumors end and legend lives forever... |

Yup, there's a default widget that I think every phone has called "battery widget" or some such. give you access to most of those on your home screen.
You can also go into your wifi settings and tell it to disable wifi sleep. What this does is put your wifi to sleep when you aren't using it, even though you are in a wifi network. When that happens, your 2/3/4g radio kicks on. 2/3/4g radios use more battery power... _________________ Real eyes realize real lies |
