I searched and found some info on peppers here on the site and elsewhere on the web. I found this site that is pretty helpful http://www.tradewindsfruit.com/hot_peppers.htm but would like some opinions. I like peppers and hot food/sauces but have limited experience with different kinds. I am also pretty new to gardening, but I want to grow a few different peppers this year. I have jalapeno and banana seeds, but would like something else. I realize there are hundreds or thousands of different peppers but what would you suggest? Not looking for anything much hotter than a jalapeno as my wife and friends will be eating then also. I want something that is versatile for cooking or other uses. Maybe a sweet pepper? I am not really sure what taste or flavor I am looking for, so basically what do you grow or like, and what is the flavor and heat scale like? I may grow some habaneros or another hot one just for fun. Thanks for any info you can share!

mystic1219,

Welcome to the world of growing your own peppers. No longer will you be stuck with the stale junk sold in stores.
I grow the jalapenos and habaneros also. Both good fresh, but you can also pickle them for future use. Also grow cayennes which are hotter then jalapenos but great dried and used as crushed peppers. You could try poblanos which can be used fresh or dryed. I don't think they are as hot as jalapenos. Serranos are easy to grow and dry. They are great in fresh salsa. Hope I could help. Good luck.

Whatever types of peppers you decide to grow, make sure you keep some distance between the varieties or else they will cross breed. You wouldn't want a bell pepper to tone down your hot pepper and visa versa.

+1 on the serranos. They are easy to grow, produce an abundant amount of fruit. The heat is maybe a notch or two hotter than a jalapeņo.

Here's one of my favorite seed suppliers. Have fun ogling all the pepper varieties!! http://www.tomatogrowers.com/LQpeppers.htm
