That's a nice looking half page spread in the Tulsa World this morning Keri!
I didn't see Robert anywhere, was he standing behind that Fat 50? _________________ Sa-Mokin Competition Barbeque

Excellent article Keri -- congrats!
Thanks Patrick for pointing this out. I only get the weekend paper so I wouldn't have seen this. _________________ Steve

<blush> Aw shucks, fellas - you know how to make a girl blush! There were a few things that she got wrong, like making it sound like we had our own cooker out at Camp Gruber last year instead of just being the TBs and line cooks that we were, leaving the "Blues Hog" spec out of the Hog Apple Beans, leaving out the caveat that 1 tsp of cayenne makes for QUITE spicy beans, and a few other little things like that. Oh, and entering "small competitions at first" - until Jenks happens, '05 and '06 AOBs are the ONLY KCBS comp we've cooked in, so I'm really looking forward to a smaller comp. Travis, they didn't a BIG picture of the cooker, but we got your name and location in there anyway.
I thought the funniest one is her creative comment about the Fat 50 being a "big cooker for a little lady." "Little" lady??? "Ruebenesque" lady, perhaps, or even "statuesque", as I tend to take after my old 1970 Buick Electra 225 ragtop, and am built for comfort, not for speed.... but little? First time in a long time anyone has used that adjective in reference to me!
We'll be testing out those two propane burners on the Fat 50 Friday night with a pot of good meaty New Orleans-style red beans (Camellia brand, of course) on one burner and finally settled on a pot of shrimp/crawfish etouffee on the other - crawfish content depends on whether I can locate any decent crawfish meat this time of year - Tulsa area crawfish source suggestions are welcome. Ya'll stop by and have a bite!

Keri, you might check with Bodean's on 51st, Perry's at 11th and Lewis, Petty's at 19th and Utica and also White River Fish Market on Sheridan.
You might also check with Da Boat at 81st and Lewis. They are really just a restaurant, but I've heard of others buying things to prepare themselves.
Mmmmm, looking forward to some good times and good food Friday night. Kim and I will be there as quickly as we can get done schleppin beers at Oktoberfest. _________________ Steve

Great article Keri!
Try Hebert's at 81st and Lewis for all things cajun. They even carry just about every flavor of Zapp's potato chips(yum!). They probably are your best bet for tail meat. _________________ Mike

I think I remember hearing on the radio just recently that Hebert's has moved.... to 71st Street just west of Lewis. _________________ Sa-Mokin Competition Barbeque

Travis, people were positively swarming over the Fat 50 at the Jenks competition. We were constantly giving "tours" of it. I gave a number of very interested people your website and Jay's phone number.
I think the snout dampers are going to need to be an available option - folks were going nuts over them when I explained what they did and how well they worked, and demonstrated for them how instantly they allowed the heat to shift from one side to the other of the cooker. The Fat50 was on a bit of a side-to-side-incline at the comp, which typically would cause the cooker to run hotter on the uphill side. No problem a'tall with that - I tweaked the snout damper on that side a bit, and VOILA - instant even heat.
1st comp on the Fat 50, and only the 2nd-ever cook on the Fat 50, and I got my first KCBS call. Coincidence? You decide...

Congrats on the call, Keri! We tried to get to Tulsa to check it out, but had to work this weekend, darn it. Was hoping to get to meet the "little Lady" with the big cooker. |
