i am going to pick up a step van on sunday, the walls and ceiling have been insulated and are covered with wood or something, i know my HD wants me to have "washable walls" what material is best? is it the frp stuff or a thin aluminum. any suggestions would be helpful.
thanks,

I have painted alumium on my walls, but If I was going to cover I would leave the plywood that is on there, mark on the floor where each stud is,and use frp.The reason for marking the stud locations is if you want to mount anything to the wall later you will know where the studs are. _________________ Good BBQ is all smoke and beers!

FRP is probably cheaper than covering with aluminum. _________________ Eric

I'm with kurtsara. If the wood interior is in decent condition, use a quality exterior gloss paint. Easily washable.
In Iowa, painted walls are considered washable. As you are aware, just ask your HD inspector.
Good luck in your new venture. _________________ Tender - Juicy - Smoky - Goodness

Kemlite is the best (short of SST) for mobile kitchens.
Same stuff they use in commercial kitchens and bathrooms.
It's a plastic/glass composite that holds up well, and cleans up fantastic.
It's not the cheapest.
I've been very happy with the better quality interior which I had to specify to my builder because they wanted to go with cheap vinyl covered luan plywood.
I'd take unpainted aluminum skin over a painted surface any day. I have it on the interior of my porch and smoke/grease/etc cleans up pretty well for it's intended use.
The time and effort you spend cleaning and re-painting will more than pay for the better quality material in a short time, not to mention it just looks and functions better from the get-go.

alum is ok but in a salt air enviroment such as florida etc, you have to be concerned about corrosion, even though most alum has alclad it is still susceptable to intergranular and direct corrosion attacks over time, (white powder which is toxic).
A fiberglass reinforced plastic which many food establishments use now is great or ss. imho of course..

| If you are like me then you need to pinch a penny til it screams, plus in today's economy you need to go into business with minimal resources tied into a fixed asset that only depreciates. You can cook the same food on a $10K trailer that you can on a $30k trailer;the food doesn't know the difference. If you go to Lowes and look where they have the FRP and wallboard they also have moisture proof wallboard. The FRP is $32.00 a sheeet and the wallboard (designed for bathrooms) is from $11.64 to $15.64 a sheet depending on the pattern. This stuff will get HD approval, in my state (Tennesse) painted walls will NOT get passed. Another even cheaper option (don't laugh) is to use linoleum flooring on the walls. My HD will pass it, remember the standrd is "washable". The linoleum comes in about 8 bazillion designs so you can get very creative with your walls. Good luck and think WWWWAAAAAYYYYY outside the box. If you watch the pennies, the dollars will take care of themselves. |

To combine the words "best" & "cheapest" you have to look at the attributes of the product offerings and compare that with the cost.
Painted wood is cheap, but certainly not the best. SST may be the best, but certainly not cheap.
To get easily cleanable walls that will not break the bank certainly look into FRP. It goes up very easy and is fairly cheap to procure. Cleaning is easy and it will last the lifetime of your trailer.
FRP is the way to go in my opinion. _________________ Somewhere in Kenya...a village is missing their idiot. |

You also have to think about HOW you are going to wash the inside.Wet rag or pressure washer, wet rag any of the surface will work but if it's a hose or pressure washer type cleaning wood and Masonite won't work for long. _________________ Good BBQ is all smoke and beers!

That's a good point, I was wondering today how different people clean their floors. _________________ The Sultan of Smoke!

Has anyone used Formica? I know they make some that looks like stainless.
I got my truck today and the ceiling is line with what I first thought was frp painted silver, but it isn't painted it is really thin aluminum that is textured like frp.
The walls are "wood" paneling like pressed wood or something. _________________ The Sultan of Smoke!

Take your menu and cooking methods into consideration too, i.e., how much and what types of mess will you be making.
Also, even if you make very little mess preping, cooking and serving, your help might. _________________ Jerk Pit Master

Just cleaned up my smoky FRP interior (again, and again, and again) last evening.
Yupp, it still cleans up nicely! _________________ BBQMAN

| If you decide to re-paint look into a water based epoxy. Very hard and durable plus easy to work. |

Trying to remeber is your smoker on the back porch or though the wall?
if thru the wall,do you get "smokers walls",that brown film like in a bar.I have always wondered if that it an issue with thru wall installs. _________________ Good BBQ is all smoke and beers!

My cookers are all on the porch DWD.
My set up is a bit unique, and I like keeping all the cooking "outdoors".
I do get smoke stains on my FRP as the cooker is adjacent to my back porch door.
Cleans up right nice with a spritz of Greased Lightning, gone over by a damp and then dry rag. _________________ BBQMAN
