Probably hawk1, but we don't yet have a rule section per se.

It also could be missed no matter where we put it, though a "Read this before you post" section might make good sense!

If it's link to Photobucket via the IMG tags, how does that effect the speed/bandwidth of the site?

When the image is linked, the end user should be downloading from photobucket, the traffic for the picture shouldn't be going through the forum's server...at least that's how it was explained to me in the past...

The explanation was correct, but I don't think anyone has been fingering 'Ring server bandwidth to the oversized picture issue...

Cheers!

My understanding of the issue is that oversized pics cause the adds to the right to get pushed off screen. Since the adds to the right are how the ring pays its bills, we need to make sure they are there to be seen so we can keep enjoying this place.

So it looks like we got a new semi-fixed width forum style.

I tested it out and the maximum width of each user's post allows for a picture width of 780 without pushing/stretching anything.

http://www.feldoncentral.com/forumpics/smokering_width.png

I tried a larger image and it still stretched things out. I wonder if each post area could be set to

width: 800px; overflow: hidden;

so that if someone posts an image over 780 pixels wide, it just cuts off.

Just curious what the new style means for attached images, if anything, or if I should just STFU. Wink

I have a suggestion for those that are sick of resizing pics on Photobucket. Don't use it! That program is nothing but trouble and time.

I suggest using Imageshack. A free website that you can resize the pics to 640 as you are saving them at the same time downloading on the site instead of downloading it on a website then resizing it.

Photoshop will automatically re-size your pics for you if you take the time to set it up. It is simple and takes about 1min. to do. What this will not do is re-size pics in your account that are already there so those pics need to be deleted and uploaded again after the re-sizer is setup. I have over 1000 pics in my photobucket and have never had them change my settings. I still preview all my posts to make sure all is well.
Here is a link to setting the re-sizer.

You may want to read this post because apparently Image shack is not all cracked up to what its supposed to be. Wink

FYI on photobucket... I haven't tried the permanent setting to upload at 640x480, and probably won't since I use it for sharing full size photos with family.

This leaves me with the option of maually re-sizing the photo before posting the bbcode link here - not a problem and the whole keeping the site's sponsor ads visible makes perfect sense.

The problem with photobucket is that if you use the built in editor to manually resize, for some reason your image here will not change sizes (at least that is what I experienced yesterday).

I want to put that out there so that folks can choose to either resize before uploading or set your upload preferences for everything to be 640 x 480.

The way I will be working it going forward, is if I have a BBQ photo that I want to share on the forums I belong to, I'll simply use irfanview to resize before uploading to photobucket, then share.

I've taken a different position. I just don't post pics anymore.

I still don't see what the big deal is. Unless they are huge, the supposedly oversized pics don't push any ads off my screen. Maybe some you should should get rid of those old monitors and get a widescreen.

The 780 maximum width would apply... but then someone would be quoted, and that takes out another 20px for each quote, so it soon get eaten up with multiple quotes.

Now with the left hand side adverts as well, there is even less room.

[RANT]
For those that want to bitch or complain that they have to change their posting methods, you can have more than one photobucket account, and you could dedicate one to the smoke ring and one to other things, or you could actually host your own pictures on your own web hosting, and do what you please with them.

The ones I have laughed at the most are those that take the time to complain about the 650 px allowed on here, that doesn't break the site format, that tell you to go to their blogs and other sites to get the "better" bigger pictures, only to find out when you get there, that the blog format they are using only allows 425px pictures... well that's real tough nuggies, bitch here but display automatically there at an even smaller size!

I hope that when we upgrade to phpBB3, we will have the auto-re-size mods on board, I won't need to remind people because it will be done automatically and there won't be any need to "mitch and boan" because all images on the site, old or new will be forced to comply by the system.

How much nicer that's going to be, than having to rely on humans taking responsibility for what they post! Shocked Wink Rolling Eyes [/RANT]

Resize them outside photobucket.

Change your upload settings.

Upload a fresh set of images.

Use the new links on the new images!
