Soooo... started off smoking stuff about a year or 2 ago on my gas grill, had a lot of good food off of it but the more I learned the more I wanted a proper smoker. Cut the bum out of a spare kettle I had and welded a cylinder I got onto it and turned it into a bullet/uds sorta thing (got pics if ya want, funny lookin' thing) but it chewed through way too much coal so ended up putting a gas burner in that as well, still makes awesome food but back at square one. We(the old man and me)have been making kegs into rotisseries on and off for a while and last time I went 'round to his he'd knocked one up out of a couple of LPG tanks. Beautiful I said, now we gotta do an offset,
got an 80 kg tank, cut out the lid
welded in supports for the grill
plasma cut holes for the intake and firebox and mocked it up
oh and cut off the fire box door
seeing as the intake pipes enter horizontal I hope it should have good heat/smoke flow whether I have tuning plates or RF, it's set up for both just gotta see what works best
mock up with fire box door and weird/mushroom stacks
Two days in so far, will post more very soon, Cheers Sam |

Ok... well the first bunch of pics were of work we did over xmas/new years, these are all from last weekend and today!
Made up a frame and welded everything in place

My brother built a bed the other week so we grabbed some of his leftovers to deck it out
Welding in the intake pipes distorted the hell out of the firebox so we made an annular to pull it back into shape. Also cut a circle out of diamond plate to get the firebox to about a 1/3 of the cook chamber volume and used the grill to hold it in place
Got the lid and brackets welded up. Rolled some 1 1/4" X 1/8" s/steel strap to seal up the sides and front

On Sunday we made the vents and fitted the stacks and built a hinge for the firebox door. Nearly there

Oh yeah, turned some handles out of hardwood for it too
So today I just made a cover for the hole in the lid and a vent for the firebox(used the same pattern we had for the chimneys), cleaned up the welds a bit and there you go!

Got it home in one piece but got a lot of strange looks on the way
hanging out with its new mates

Good on ya mate...........looks awesome. Now let's see it in action. What's first? Aussie Lamb Kabobs?
With all the snow we're having, I would love to be down under right now!!! (unless you're in Queensland).
Cheers

That ranks as one of the cooler builds.
I really like the mushroom stacks, look like a Van de Graaff generator. _________________ -------

Nice stainless work to be sure!
Why no stainless shelves (or ATP)? _________________ BBQMAN
