A "Snot Storm" really? How in the heck did that happen? Do tire-chains help? How do you keep the windshiled clear enough to see through? Do you add some mucinex to the washer fluid to help? _________________ Just remember that the toes you may step on during your climb to the top will also be attached to the a$$es you'll be forced to kiss on your way back down! |

Tuesday lunchtime and Vern shows up unscathed. He and Lola made up.
Flashback one month ago....
Mrs. JAllen tells me that Vern told her (pretty pathetic, I know)...told here about an event one month ago.
One of Lola's working girl friends shows up and urgently tells Vern she needs 1k for some urgent operation for a young'un.
Vern doesn't like the idea very much so he calls Lola, who mysteriously doesn't answer.
He "loans" the money.
Lola promptly calls him saying, "Why did you loan her money? She will drop it in a casino immediately and you will never see it again."
Incidentally, all the casinos in the city are being closed by the government starting Jan. 1. There are probably 150 locations in the city, which means rent and real estate prices should be coming down in the near future.
In addition to that, with the new president elected, power outages have begun again with a vengeance. Last night at 4am, both toddlers came in screaming that their night lights had been turned off. I gave 'em a flashlight, but my chili was running hot after the excitement and I couldn't go back to sleep, so I came in a bit early.
After I jumped over the gate 'cause the lock was frozen, I turned off the alarm and came inside to turn on the heating. As I was pulling up thesmokering to tell the "Vern" story, I see a pack of locals whistling outside.
The gate was locked, but the door was unlocked, so I remembered my Spring terror experience and headed over to the door with my keys, as if I'm gonna unlock it, planning to actually lock it and call the guard company.
It was the guard company's "quick reaction team" quickly reacting to the alarm being turned off at an unexpected time.
I was happy about that. _________________ Reverse flow Sterno can

Thanks for the updates and the entertainment Jeff!
Vern certainly sounds like a nice guy, but ever heard the old adage "A fool and his money are soon parted ways"?
Glad to here that Mr. $7,000-$40,000 watch wasn't looking for him.
If it was real and not a knockoff (strong possibility) he didn't get it by being Mr. Niceguy........... _________________ BBQMAN

BBQMAN, thanks for the comment.
I'm no expert, but living out here I've seen lots and lots of knockoffs. This didn't seem to be one.
It's a pretty unpleasant feeling having people at your place that you'd rather just not have. Also, so very rare. I think only one other time did I give some guy the sign that he wasn't welcome here at all.
He was that rude guy who was here on the night of the robbery, being really rude. He came in a couple times being rude, and the last straw was when he brought in some of his own smoked fish and started cutting it on our tables and smelling the place up.
He hasn't been back since.
These guys were just bordering on nightmare, one step below Mr. Hatchet. Actually, I'd probably rather have Mr. Hatchet in instead of these two. _________________ Reverse flow Sterno can

Geronimo, he did come back in today and had his usual three beers. I'm actually a bit concerned about him as his girlfriend is the type I would stay very far away from.
The fact that she may have sent these two in tells me he's in a potentially explosive situation.
Oh, did I mention these two offered to "help" us if we needed any help?
That didn't make for a very dandy evening. _________________ Reverse flow Sterno can

JAllen, never a dull moment over there.
Sounds like Vern needs to carefully extract himself from a big problem waiting to happen.
Glad you didn't need any "help", free help on the front end is always costly on the back end, in alot of unpleasant ways.
I just can't figure out how he can sit at the bar for a few hours and only have 3 beers.
Thanks for the update. |

As far as extracting himself, I don't think that's gonna happen. He seems to thrive on the conflict.
As far as the beers, the only thing I can say in his defense is that all the beers served here are pints, or 1/2 liters. Except Corona Extras, which are 12oz.
And in some less than good news, we seem to have parted ways with Julia, the BBQ queen. She was sick too often on nights when she was supposed to do the night shift until morning.
That left me here last night chasing nickels until 3am before telling the guard to call me in the J-Lo room if anyone came in. _________________ Reverse flow Sterno can

In some good news, Mrs. JAllen found WD-40 so I don't have to jump over the fence anymore to get in.
She has been spraying it around everywhere here and at home, and I'm always picking up the smell on my hands from some lock or something.
I like the smell of WD-40.
And in the most interesting news of the week so far, Jared, one of our best customers was in last night.
There are people who come here for the food and he is one of them for sure. I asked him about consistency and spices, as these are two areas I'm really concerned about.
What I took away is that consistency is in fact an issue, not only for me. Also, our rub has lost a lot of it's luster over the past six months or so.
As I've mentioned, I've been complaining that I don't taste the spices much. Everyone else says everything is fine.
Well, things aren't fine.
Part of the spice problem is that we don't have pro spices here; just what we get from Big Ronita at the bazaar from open bags. _________________ Reverse flow Sterno can

Regarding Mail.
We've been getting mail again from Canada. Mrs. JAllen has also had a talk with the mail investigator, who said that anything that didn't arrive can be found in 90% of cases.
If anyone sent t-shirts, could you send me a pm. Any of the below information would be helpful if you have it.
1. Date sent
2. City sent from
3. Weight of package. _________________ Reverse flow Sterno can

Ya, we have pints here in the states also.
You got any good beers there? Want any good beers?
I work for a very well known craft brewer and distiller. Send me a PM if your interested. We are carried in a lot of places around the globe but you might be the first in your part of the world. _________________ #3 LIAR

Oregon Smoker, thanks for the comment.
There are some okay beers around here. There's a local beer, "Arpa" which is low-carbonated and has a kick of about 9%. Other than that we get some Russian lagers, and Danish Tuborg and Carlsberg.
The Russian company, Baltica has a nice range of okay beers.
Baltica-3, lager, dry.
Baltica 5- lager mid-sweet
Baltica 6 - dark beer
Baltica 7 - lager, sweet
Baltica 8 - wheat beer
Baltica 9 - malt liquor
The only Canadian beer I'm seeing is MGD, but not consistently supplied.
I'd love to get some cool beers from the US, but I'm sure the shipping would kill the deal. _________________ Reverse flow Sterno can

Might be amazed. We are always looking for cool out posts and yours might be the next.
PM your personal email and any pertinent info. I will pass it on to our international sales guy. It might give you the upper hand with the expats that visit your place and want a taste of home. Nothing like good food coupled with a good beer. _________________ #3 LIAR

You should definitely search out and use whole spices, never ground. If you've never used them this way you will be amazed at the difference in flavour.
I'd recommend that if your going to have any spices shipped into you always buy whole. Not sure what pro spices are perhaps that is whole. It may seem like a lotta work grinding your own, but thats one of the things that will make your formulas stand out. If you don't have a spice mill or electric coffee grinder, a mortar and pestle does just fine. Measure by weight, and to control your blends, blend them yourself and write down the formulas, keeping notes on previous batches. That way you can tweak your formulation if necessary. Stay away from things like garlic salt or onion salt, its a waste of money. Unless making a dry rub I never use onion powder or garlic powder, always fresh. Your attention to detail and quality ingredients will give you a definite advantage. _________________ Rod |

I'll skip the PM:
I mailed a shirt to Ed along with postal money late spring/early summer.
I assume he mailed them along with others long ago.
Should have been there by now. _________________ BBQMAN

On the t-shirts, I don't know if it's them, but we've just received a message from the post office that we have a package mailed from the US at 9kg.
Might be a lot of shirts, as we' weren't expecting anything else. _________________ Reverse flow Sterno can

More on Vern.
Vern's been dating Lola for almost two months now.
I wrote about the "loan" to Lola's friend, but what I didn't know about until recently is that Lola had asked Vern for money for a serious operation a month ago.
The operation cost 2.5k, and Vern gave her the money. This week, Lola informs Vern she needs an operation.
"But I gave you money for the operation last month."
"Oh, I gave that money to my parents because they needed it. Now I still need the operation."
Vern plans to pay again for the operation.
It's also strange to me that the "operation" is taking place in some small city, not in the capital where the best care is available. It's also in a city where Vern can't visit as he has to work here.
For me, the situation is concerning not so much about the money, the concern is that it seems that this girl is dangerous. It's likely that she's not moving around "contraband clothes," but something more sinister.
It's likely that she sent the thugs in to check on Vern.
If this goes South, the scenarios are truly frightening and very, very expensive.
Here's the nightmare scenario:
1. Lola decides she's done with Vern after he closes the cash tap.
2. After a night of partying, she convinces Vern to hit the hooka just a little bit.
3. Lola plants "contraband clothes" on Vern and her police friends show up.
4. Vern is in deep, a quick blood test shows he's dirty and the cost to get out is well into five figures.
Now back to our regular scheduled programming. _________________ Reverse flow Sterno can
