I am starting on my 1st uds build, and I have a question concerning the inside of the drum. It appears to be painted on the inside, and not a liner. I plan on having a hot, long fire in it and see how much will come off. Whatever is left, I'm just going to leave.

PS- I have attempted to post a picture of the drum, but I don't seem to be able to. [img][/img]

My question is will it be ok to just leave what doesn't come off inside the drum? I have read on here where a lot of people are suggesting sandblasting- but is it really necessary to remove every piece of paint inside the drum?

IMO depends on the type of paint, and since you can't ever really know for sure, it's better to be safe than sorry.

There has been much discussion on here about that. Some will say to remove it all.
My opinion is: If it won't burn off after filling with wood and doing the initial burn out it won't burn off when cooking. My guess is that I burnt mine out at 900+?? But that is just my opinion. Maybe it is killing me slowly, but so far so good.

+1 and coated with a good layer of seasoning to boot.

YMMV

if you build a hot fire all the paint should burn off. a weedburner is pretty handy for this too. i think sandblasting the inside is a little overkill.
