Well, after reading nearly everything on this site, I have finally decided to build me a UDS drum smoker. I have acquired a 55 gallon drum, and I will be burning it out next week.
I do have a couple of questions concerning the thermometer though- I would like to install at least a 2" round one, but how long does it needs to be? Also, what is the best kind, and is there somewhere online to purchase one? |

acw, its hard to beat a regular old turkey frying thermometer with a 12'' stem for a UDS. They can be had at most grocery stores, Wallmart or sporting goods stores. There are several ways to mount them. I drill a hole through a 1/2'' bolt and slip it through. Some folks use brass fittings as well. I mount mine about 1'' below my grate. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

| k.a.m., thanks for the reply- I will start looking one either tomorrow or next week. It is predicted that we will get 5-9" of snow tonight, so I probably will not go anywhere tomorrow (for eastern NC, this is like a blizzard. This amount of snow for us will absolutely shut every store down for 3 days). |
