| I cut a tree top up on some property i visit and got home and it looks just like hickory. I put a little in the fire place tonight and and doesnt smell like hickory? Does it have to cure before you get that hickory smell? I may try to post some photos and get some help with ID. |

I don't think that's hickory-might be maple of some sort, but I am no expert...others will be along with more knowledge _________________ ~Joe

Knowing what part of the country that you are in would also help identify that wood. Was there any leaves, seeds or nuts laying around under the tree to help with identification?
Maple seeds are very unique, as are Hickory nuts. The bark and the heartwood do like similar to maple, but that is not enough for me to positively identify it.
Some species of hardwoods are not suitable for cooking, so please get a proper ID on that before using it for cooking _________________ Just remember that the toes you may step on during your climb to the top will also be attached to the a$$es you'll be forced to kiss on your way back down! |

I'd guess maple as well. Looking at the end grain of that section looks just like maple. _________________ Not eating meat is a choice, Eating meat is an instinct

Looks like it could possibly be a young seedling pecan. Either way(maple or pecan), get 'er split up, let it cure and you should have some high quality smoking wood. _________________ Propane is for frying, not Que!
