i came across these pictures on a pit builders website and thought this cooker was interesting. what are your thoughts on not having the firebox hanging down? without having to buy all the materials for the firebox, this would be a very cost effective way to build a offset. i wonder how well it works?

| i guess i just assumed it was that style because it has an exhaust one end and what seems to be a firebox on the other? |

If you note the wall inside the pit it kind of is an offset. I would like to see some more pictures of the "firebox". _________________ 22.5 Weber Kettle

From Webster:
off·set
/n., adj. noun, adjective, verb, -set, -set·ting.
–noun
Machinery . a jog or short displacement in an otherwise straight and continuous line, as in a pipe, lever, or rod, made to avoid objects or to connect with other parts.
So, theoretically, with the plate in place between the fire location and the smoke chamber one could look at this as an offset of sort since there is definitely a "short displacement" in the length of the pipe diameter...
Just my 2 cents and YMMV...
I see no reason why this wouldn't work as an offset, but in my opinion it may take more fuel than a conventional type since heat rises and you are having to get the heat and smoke to where it goes out the bottom of the partition.
Also note that they have the exhaust dropped to almost the bottom of the smoke chamber... I'd love to try it and see how it does with an 85% lump/15% wood combination. Plenty of heat and slight smoke.
This type of cooker would lend itself well to a reverse flow I would think.

For sure, a nice looking rig. It just may not lend itself to low and slow cooking tho and it may not be its intended purpose. I can see lots of chicken, sausage, and burgers getting done. Damn good tailgater. _________________ Backyarder

A while back haileyscomet had a local High school build him a cooker. It had an integrated firebox as such. The temps in the upper section were not controllable and stayed at grilling temps always. I remember this build because we talked in length on how to modify it to make it work. I am not sure which way he went with it. I have his post but all pics are gone. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.
