Anybody ever use Black Oak? A friend cut one down and ask me if I could use some for the smoker. Just wondering if I can use it?

If it is the same thing we call "Black Jack", you just hit a gold mine.
Cut it to length, split it and let it season for about a year. Keep it dry.
It burns hot, but has a great flavor.

Sorry, can't help you on the green wood.
The one tree that I got was already down for a couple years. When the bark falls off, the outside of the wood turns black.
It's a biatch to split and it will dull a chain in a heartbeat, when it is dry.
Hopefully others will chime in with an answer for ya.

Any hardwood should work. Lots of folks use oak though I never have. If it is dry, it will be difficult to cut. If it is still wet, cut to the size you want and season it for a year, or at least 9 months.

I just spent much of this day splitting out fresh-cut 36-inch diameter rounds of black oak for my firewood, by hand, with a maul and wedges. l would not call it hard to split. About the same splitting features as red oak, probably a little bit better than red. This is the first batch of black oak I have ever seen. After this thread, I will have to try some of it for smoking!
