Once made they will hold a bag and a half of charcoal and I use the 20 or 22 lb bags. Wink

Shocked

That's a lot of charcoal! I like your idea on that though. I'm not sure if I'm going to be using hog rings or have the welding teacher at school do it up for me. I could probably just about fit a whole batch of my homemade lump in a basket at one time!

If you are getting a drum for free and paying only $7 for sandblasting, you are almost stealing to start with, so paying for a few other things won't hurt you too bad! Laughing

Well, it might not even be $7 for the sandblasting Wink All I have to do is pay for the sand. I was told it wouldn't be more than a bag, but that a bag is $7 Laughing

I don't often actually fill them that full, there's no need 99.9% of the time, but when someone asks me about running out of charcoal in the middle of a cook, you now know why I wonder about what and how they are cooking!

I do must of my long cooks on less than 3/4 of a bag.

Here is a basket I recently made for my UDS that I put together without welds.

The expanded metal was bolted together with 3 stainless steel bolts. The metal is 12" high x 54(?)" long and you can see a few inches of overlap. The metal is fastened to the Weber grate using hogs clips.

I then fastened a pizza pan to the bottom using 3 more bolts. I didn't really need the "legs" on the bottom but it functions fine. I have over 20 hours on one 10 lb bag of lump and the ash wasn't bad so the clearance is adequate.
