Decided to go with 2 doors with one overlapping the other so I can have a large open area, or a small one.

Can I get an opinion on my opening location? I know it's the right size)k.a.m. figured it for me) but in my opinion it might be a little high? It will be close to the cooking area, I was thinking about making a heat deflector to direct the heat down and then back up? What do you think??

xprmntl1, your moving right along and your cooker is looking great. Very Happy
Your situation with the opening is why I recommend a half moon so that your firebox can be as low as possible. A deflector is a good idea at this point, it will allow you to get your heat/smoke down.
If you are going with a reverse flow cooker then you will most likely be all right without the deflector. A Lang cookers plate is as close as 1'' on the firebox side and 3'' on the opposite end.

Well, I had planned on a reverse flow but now i'm leaning towards a reg. offset. So if I add a deflector plate, I wonder how long I need to make it?

xprmntl1, I would go 6'' to 8'' long and run the length of the firebox, angle it to where the lower end is at least 6'' below the top of my grates. This way if you choose to use tuning plates you can start your tuning plate tracks at the end of the deflector.

k.a.m. I've got all the calculations for my smoker, but I need one more if you don't mind. I have the dimensions for 4in. or 6in. smokestack, but can you calculate for a 5in. pipe for me? I came across 8feet of free 5 in pipe and plan on using it. My smoker dimensions again are 30in dia. x 66in. long with a 30x 24in. firebox. Thanks!

xprmntl1, going with the dimensions 30'' x 66'' cooking chamber and a firebox of 30'' wide 24'' tall and 30'' deep you would need one 5'' pipe 55'' long. If I were to go this route I would go two stacks about 27'' tall and use adjustable caps if need be.
Now if the firebox is 30'' wide and 24'' tall and 24'' deep you would need one 5'' stack 44'' long. You only gave me 30'' x 24'' and I needed a third number to figure. If the box sizes are not correct let me know and I will re-figure your stack.

Phew! I guesstimated at weld shop class tonight and went with 1 48in. long. 5in. dia pipe. Yes my firebox is 30x24x24 so I should be in the area?

Here's the deflector plate I am going to add, it will be hinged and also serve as a damper for the firebox.

The long smokestack, I am going to add a plate on top that will be hinged to close off and protect from the weather.

Well, she's about 99% done, still gotta cut a hole for the temp. gauge. Fired it up for the first time last night and boy this thing is so much easier to control than my old small Lowe's Charbroiler. Got up to 350 in a matter of minutes, and the damper I put on brought it down to 225 pretty fast. I would like to thank you all for your help and especially K.A.M. Without your calculations I would have just guessed at all the dimensions. I still have plans to section off the other half of the trailer for wood storage with expanded metal and angle iron. Thanks again!

Nice job. Right on with welding up the firebox, then cutting your holes and doors.

Thanks, I smoked a whole chicken, along with a small stick of bologna and 10 chicken legs. Turned out nice, i'm very happy with the smoker. Gonna tackle something harder tomorrow or the next day, got a small brisket from a corn fed calf donated to try out!
