I asked for some cook info about competition but have not heard back from anyone.
Has anyone cooked at this one?
Anybody got any info yet?
I'm getting worried. This would be my first real cookoff and I want to be sure I get everything right. |

Napper - mattpair (his forum username) and I are planning on going to this event and cooking.
I e-mailed the BBQ person and got my packet in the mail with all of the information and registration information on the event.
The person's name that I e-mailed is Paul Willingham and their e-mail address is pawillin@hotmail.com
Drop him a line and I am sure he will get you the info needed as quick as he can. He mailed it to me here in BHAM, so I am sure he will do the same for you.
I am looking forward to meeting you at the competition. _________________ Jeff Vreeland

Man, been away from 'the ring' for a while, things just are really crazy at work right now. Anyhow Me and Jeff and our team will be there! This will be our 2nd pro comp so Hoping to do a little better than we did the first one. Jeff is going to KCBS judging school and I hope this will help us out a little, maybe to have a better idea of what the judges are looking for. That and He just got a frickin sweet WSM, now if I can just slow down enough to do a few modifications to my offset we might have good thing going. Roll Tide! and I look forward to seeing everyone at the cook! _________________ Alabama GrillBillies Cook Team

Hey Matt,
What part of Alabama you from?
Have you been to this event before?
This would be our first time and I am not sure what to expect at the site. The reg. form asked if you wanted a port-a-let at your site for $75. Surely they will have some "potties" for everyone to use without having a private on at your site?

I'm originally from Alabaster, currenlty living in Calera (all in south shelby county)
I haven't been to this particular event before, but like you I would assume there will be public use port-a-potties. One thing I can tell you is that the pros at these events are as good of people as you could hope to find anywhere! There were plenty of people at our first comp. in september giving us tons of advise and answering every question we had. One guy even let us taste all of his food! His Sauce was unbelievable! I don't know how he didn't win the sauce catagory, I would buy that stuff by the gallons! These things are just so much damn fun, it almost makes how you place in the event not really matter. We will be there and would be happy to help you out in any way we can, but honestly we really are still rookies at this ourselves. _________________ Alabama GrillBillies Cook Team

Matt,
Thanks for the info!
The flyer I got from them says there are no RV campers or vehicles allowed in the cook area. I assume we all just put up a tent, a couple of those "easy ups" and "camp out" around the cooker for the night?
Heck, we will be up most of the night cooking anyway!
I suppose a 10x10 tent to go in to catch a nap is o.k. at the cook site. Is that what everybody does?
I appreciate the info.

Man at my first comp I saw everything from us sleeping in a van to $500,000 campers, so I guess we will just have to wait till it gets a little closer to the event to get some better info. And ya, staying up all night cooking is what makes it so fun! _________________ Alabama GrillBillies Cook Team

I am still waiting on getting our information from the vendor - he has stated he unsuccessfully sent it a couple times.
How much was per team? We are trying to work to get our money together and just curious.
Thanks!! _________________ Jeff Vreeland

It was $250.00 per team. An extra $75 if you want a Port-O-Let at your site!
I figured I could find a tree for one night so I did not order my own Port-O-let!
Did not really want one next to my cooker anyway!!!!!!!!!!!
He said he sent me info for 5 weeks. Said he sent it 3 different times. He needs to check up on his mail service or office help cause something is not working! Keep asking. I finally got the info. It was just a small single page folder. Not really much info.
I sent in the money this morning. Hope to hear from them in a few days to tell us if we have a spot. This is our first cook so I want it to be good! |

This will be our second competition - first being the Stokin The Fire in Birmingham, Alabama.
We are doing our test run next weekend.
Was there any other categories mentioned on the sheet other then the main 4? _________________ Jeff Vreeland
