as I was driving to the store, I saw a guy putting a free sign by a small pile of wood, I stopped and asked what kind it was, he said he thought it was pecan but couldnt be sure since he had just moved in and the wood was stacked on the back deck. I know oak, maple and sassafras, but the only experience I have with pecan is what comes out of a bag. Its kind of hard to split. What do you think?

I'm no expert, but that looks a lot more like hickory or oak to me. The pecan I've had didn't have bark that rough or a grain that deep. The hickorys and oaks in my back yard do.

Looks like it could be, but I'm no expert.

when I did my search.
I guess the best thing to do is go find a pecan tree and match it up to what I have.

Looks just like the limbs that fall from my old growth pecan trees every year. I would say that it is Pecan.

That's pecan where I live. I've got thirty trees and that's what it looks like. Usually oak is a tighter, smoother bark and hickory is fairly smooth with deep ruts but not as scaly. Also, hickory is usually a light grey.

From the picture I saw I do believe it ius pecan. When I saw the end and linial grain I pretty much knew for sure because it identical to hickory which is from the same family. Around here pcecan is not a native tree . Though there some success with transplanting most are from grafting pecan limbs yo small hickory saplings. That may be why some people see pecan trees with smoother bark.
