Anyone doing an MIM event ask questions and I'll try to pass on as much information as I can. They are fun events but pretty stressful.
Here are the pictures if you didn't see them yet.

Alex,
Congratulations! What an accomplishment to finish 2nd overall. I too did a MIM early September and went against Natural Born Grillers--they swept everything.
I LOVE the baby's pig suit. My daughter is 2 months old so she was too little to wear something like that. We just put a stuffed big on her stroller and my wife wore her team shirt. It was a lot of fun but you're right---it is very stressful.
Again--congrats on a very successful cook. _________________ Jesse Gabbard

Alex, congrats on a great comp. I'm looking forward to my first KCBS comp next year. I wouldn't want to even think about a MIM comp -- talk about too much stress! _________________ Steve

The Diamondplate Fat 50 is one slick smoking machine. Using lump and wood we were able to maintain temperature for 14 hours. No hot spots and the grate temp and just above the shoulder temp were within 5 degrees of each other. We put in 2 Tel Tru thermometers on the Fat 50 and they were dead on with the Maverick ET-73. I believe my grandaughter was responsible for a couple of points from each judge, she was the hit of the competition. Our spouses were responsible for the decor. They did a fantastic job of keeping it simple and clean. Getting to cook and spend time with my son was a fantastic experience, great job Alex. And now that you have seen the pictures you know where the Big Butt came from.

Great job Ranucci's!!!
The preliminary scores look very good. Keep in mind you would drop the low score for each criteria. That being said you did not have to keep many unfavorable scores. You already stated that you were 1st after the preliminaries.
The finals scores would be interesting to see. The lesson from them will be how you were scored compared to all the other finalists. With each of those criteria scores broken out to a decimal and by comparing all the finals totals you can get a feel how you compared to the others.
Jacks Old South and Gwatney are two seasoned championship caliber teams. The difference for you between 1st and 2nd could be as little as 0.1 point.
It does take a team effort to pull off a MIM contest, but you have helped others realize that it can be done. _________________ Big Tom

Awesome showing gents!
You did well going up against the big boys! Gwatney and Jack's are hard to beat! (I know from personal experience!)
Love the pics! It's great that your family got to share it together as well!
The guys with the double decker were parked next to us at the Pig Jig last year- nice bunch! _________________ BBQMAN

Thanks BBQMan, I have never heard of Gwatneys before but they placed or won in all 3 categories. The double decker rig was BlackJack BBQ, pretty cool guys out of Charleston, SC. _________________ Alex

I think so. I just looked at the information on it tonight. I will be a one man team so far. I need to find 1 or 2 more guys to help out.

Alex, Gwatneys got there name from the large Chevy dealer that sponsors them. They do a lot of comps, because they can easily afford it!
The key to financing comps as a hobby is to have sponsors (or have a lot of disposable income to play with).
To participate at the Big Pig Jig last year set me back about $1,500 bucks. Of course we had a large fuel bill, the hotel rooms etc to contend with! _________________ BBQMAN

BBQMAN speaks the truth!
Gwatney, Jacks Old South, Natural Born Grillers and Huish Grill team are all heavily funded competition teams that are usually competing somewhere every weekend. If you look at the MIM standings they are all at the top. Jacks Old South has been one of the more dominant MIM teams for years, they are now cooking many KCBS and FBA events throughout the Southeast.
The expense of traveling to the competitions is taking a toll on the MIM circuit. We have cut our cooking schedule in half from a few years ago. We haved cooked as many as ten MIM contests plus the MIM World Championship. We will do 3 MIM & 2 KCBS (one of the KCBS is home town contest that changed from MIM). We got lucky on the hometown contest and will have a complimentary free entry by cooking for one the event sponsors. We hope to do similar for one of the other nearby MIM contests in November.
Since many of my team members families are growing they don't have the disposeable income, or time, to fund or participate in as many events. This is contributing to our shift to the KCBS contests as the manpower requirements are less. The down side is we have our equipment set-up for easy MIM set-ups, but take up about twice the space of most KCBS teams. _________________ Big Tom

Sorry I didn't get to congratulate you sooner bud! That's outstanding! It was really nice meeting you and your family at the Ft. Mill competition as well.
When can I talk to you about getting that talented wife of yours to design us a logo?
Take Care!
