This question is really not directed at the “Backyard” cook, but for those that cook 10 or more comp’s/yr.
After much mixing, cooking and turn-ins. Do you prefer to mix your own rub, and I know many do. Or have you found an off-the-shelf rubs that you like best.

I personally have a mix that I use on Butts.
On chicken, Pork Ribs and Brisket I have off-the-shelf rubs that give me the best results.

You beat me to this! I planned to ask the same question. I work out of town through the week and if I throw comps into the mix, time will be stretched. I too am looking for a great "off the shelf" rub.

Which brings up the question, which ones and how well are they scoring?

Off the shelf injections, rubs, and sauces work for me.

I have made my own, but it's just too damn easy to buy 'em. Lately I have been working a lot, so I have been buying 'em. It would be great to make them my self & develop my own, but I don't have the time.

I dont know if I would characterize it as a Preference .... but often I do buy off the shelf. Mostly because its right there at the store, along with the rest of the meal I am cooking that day. Then I add a few things to it to make it "my" special blend. That's a backyard cooking perspective.

I buy off the shelf rubs....Big Ron makes three great rubs that I use daily, makes my life much easier.I used to make my own,at the end of the year the kitchen cabinets are full of stale spice's that I may have used just a pinch of in my rubs, they are then thrown out and wasted.

Dont see the point in using off the shelf rubs and sauces in contests. Winning with other peoples products doesnt really say much about your abilities..Sure you can know your pit and thermo but to win with all your own product is the real deal...
