Hey, I just wanted to let everyone know my team made the finals in Shoulder and Ribs (the only two categories we entered) in our very first competition. It was a MIM sanctioned contest called the Murphysboro Barbecue Cookoff in Southern Illinois. We ended up with second in shoulder and third in Ribs. We actually won the preliminary round in ribs which includes the blind judging and on-site judging. I don't remember all our scores off hand but I do know that we got perfect scores across the board in ribs in the blind judging. I can't tell you how excited I was because we were competing against some very established teams from around the country. Mike Mills, who is one of only two people (I think) to win Memphis in May grand champion 3 times, ran the event and told us that we were no fluke and that he was very impressed with us. I didn't come here just to brag either. I wanted to tell all of you that this forum provided me with the most valuable information that I found anywhere. Even though a lot of you seem to compete in KCBS instead of MIM, I still cant put into words how instrumental this forum was in preparing me for what we were about to face. Thank you all very much. I will have some pics very soon if you want to see them.

Good job Joe!

The Murphysboro contest draws a strong MIM field. I several friends on different teams that cook that event.

Always a boost to your confindence when you get to finals, especially for first timers.

Everything from pictures of turn-in boxes, judges tendencies to prefer sweeter sauces, to wether to inject or not to inject......those are just off the top of my head. I really had no clue what to expect, so even though this stuff may be common knowledge to most, it was all new to me and this is where I found it first.

Congratulations! It really does help when you spend your time doing your "homework" before you enter a competition. I don't know a lot of people who do as well as you have done though. Great job!
