Headed out to Alpine tomorrow for my sons football game. He has been saying he wanted a BBQ pit out at Sul Ross. So I am suprising him with a pit. Taking out a 55 gallon drum pit, a Texas Habachi. Not the greatest thing in the world but for 80 bucks I figured a bunch of college kids can not complain. Going to cook up some steaks for him and some of his team mates after the game so I will post up some picks of its maiden voyage.

What a FANTASTIC part of Texas! Any College that gives rodeo scholarships is a slice of heaven. Those boys will make good use of that smoker.

Just got back. Had a great trip and excellent food last night. I will try to get some pics up ASAP, so I can prove it happened.
The boys lost 32-35. A game they should have won by 3 touchdowns. They stopped themselves 4 times. Once from inside the one they fumbled into the endzone. Not a great day for the Lobos.

Lets see this may just offend me.
I roll into town at 12:45 after driving 350 miles. Kickoff is at 1:00, watch the game. Stop by the store after the game to pick up some food and get some charcoal. Cause I got football players to feed dont have time to go hunt down wood. Remember here I am taking care of some college kids.
SO TELEKING KISS MY GREASY HAUNCHES. IF YOU DONT LIKE IT STAY OFF MY POST.
The boys loved it and I enjoyed spending a few hours with my son before heading home. So I call the meal and the trip a success.
Ya guess I was offended.

Chef, that is an awesome looking grill. I know your son and his buddies will get years of enjoyment from it. Some how I get the feeling that I will be reading a post on here in the years to come by Son of Chef doing exactly the same thing for his son. Well done.

When I played football at SRSU (1978) we would have loved having a football dad like you. That Mountainside dorm food was nasty and there wasn't much of Q place in Alpine. I know those guys really appreciate it!

I only played there one year and my folks went to every game away and at home from Austin (432 miles from their driveway to Jackson Field). So I know how hard it is for parents to support SRSU Football. My hat is off to you for your dedication.

Everyone on the forum should realize that this is Division III non-scholarship football. These kids really want to play. Sully football players and coaches ride buses farther than you'd ever imagine to play their away games with very little support or fanbase. My hat is off to the kids also.

Teleking should be excused. He's from Maine... so I'm sure he has no clue how hard it can be to find hardwood for BBQ in the Trans-Pecos of Texas. Laughing I don't think he would want you to use cedar (juniper), sage brush, or cow chips for smoking ribs or chicken! Shocked Have a cold one at Railroad Blues for me!

Sounds great sailtravis. Appreciate the thumbs up there. Yep the trip is something else. The west games were played in Alpine this year so missed going out to Mew Mexico but we are traveling to Mississippi. that one is about 750 miles I believe. Come on out sometime the town has not changed much since than. The dorms and cafateria are a ton better though. Son moved off campus this year. Not sure why but guess he wanted to feel more independent. It is truley Gods country out there. I love the trip, just wish it was closer.

I think teleking was implying that you should have used any other charcoal but K, not necessarily hardwood.
