I have the Linclon 100 from HD that I use for very small jobs on household current. IMO the duty cycle is pathetic. It does do a good job in short bursts but it would drive you crazy building a smoker. _________________ D. Tillery

So is a 110 volt, (I feel stuck with 110 right now) and the question I have is getting a 120 or 140 amp better or is it just the maker the issue or 110 volt.. _________________ ***

tiz,
Not trying to be the backside of an elephant, but looking at the time you started this thread (Sep 7) till today (Sep 29), and you're still presenting questions about different welders, I'm wondering if you're ready to start welding just yet.
I believe you may have a little more research and reading to do on the basics of welders, how much power they require, the differences between flux core, MIG, ARC, TIG, etc. Then define the scope of your anticipated usage of one (small jobs, general usage, heavy usage) and what types of metal you can forsee yourself welding (aluminum, steel, stainless, etc.), and so on. And last, but CERTAINLY not least ............. your budget.
If you've hashed out these requirements, and have answers to each, then the guys can really give you some great choices and you'd save a lot of their time. At this time I'm not sure how much closer you are to making a final decision than you were Sep 7th. |

Some may NOT think of this as a waist of time and if they do they should NOT click on the thread..
If I was helping to answer some questions I would consider myself as a teacher..
To some it is not good to learn and if that is also the case then they should also NOT click on this thread.. _________________ ***

since you are new to welding and will be learning alot on your own, i would suggest a millermatic by miller welders. they are simple to set and figure out, most of it is done for you because you set it by metal thickness and not amps. they come in both 110v and 220v models. _________________ Im not a proctologist, but I know an asshole when I see one!

Nice choice
I saw that harbor freight now has welding blankets. Will go a long way to keep sparks were they ain't supposed to be when sitting.
So what's the first project going to be? _________________ FNG Smoker |

Do you have a link for the blankie.
1. Putting some scrap pieces together.
2. Putting in some supports for the (used to be) floor of the trailer, roof raising mechanism, weld the hitch on it instead of bolting, and what ever elsse I find..
3. Modify the smokers. _________________ ***

If it were me i would leave the fiber glass blanket alone, its going on your lap and probably wont be comfy. The HF welding blanket that i have is heavy duty canvas, that is burn resistant. |

I think to sit on the blanket would be good.
Now that I think of it how does someone weld with just 1 LB of wire.
Translation:
I didn't order any wire or even a helmet.
What wire do most of you guys use ??
I used to have a self darkening helmet.
Are they the way to go and are the expensive ones that way because of the flames on them. _________________ ***

I would use a auto darkening helmet.
This is the one thing i would not skimp out on, you want to be able to see after your done working for the day. |

I imagine the inexpensive ones are alright. Auto helmets come with options and the more options you want or need as far as your work criteria then that is what you will most likely spend. My helmet doesn't have flames it has an Eagle it runs a little over 250.00. It is a Miller Performance series and I love it. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

So where is a good place to get a helmet that is NOT be a arm and 2 legs ?? I can ad bling to it myself.
Where Is the place to get wire ??
Should someone with a wire feed have all sizes wire available.
What size wire (flux core) does one get ?? _________________ ***

This is for the ones that care..
While trying to get all adaptors for the muffler install I stopped at the welders area at Blain's farm and fleet..
I ask many guys if they knew about welding as the workers where not around at the time.
While asking this guy the first question bob the worker stopped in. When we where done the isle was full of listeners and askers.
WOW did it turn out well to say the least.. Many said I did a great job at getting the lincoln.. That made me happy that I seem to have done it all myself.
I decided to get a spool of 030 flux and the helmets seamed to be more than what I remembered so I didn't get one..
Is this helmet worthy of getting or do you think I should keep looking ??
I even put a "Looking for ad" out in space to see if anything happens..

If your worried about the prices of helmets you could probably get away with a good pair of welding goggles. They wont protect you much from sunburn or sparks but will protect your eyes, while you save for a good helmet. |
