If it works run your but off to get there that is a very good deal. Especialy if it has a gas cylinder with it. You will spend close to $200 just to get a decient sized gas cylinder. Make sure that who you are buying the cylinder from owns it and is not leasing it. YES AS LONG AS IT WORKS GO FOR IT. VERY GOOD DEAL. This welder goes for over $400 new + the cylinder and a cart if there is one with it. Let me know if you get it. Caleb

In answer to your other questions. Tips for a wire feed are a consumable. if you buy them buy a pack of 5 or 10 at a time you will use them. It is a copper threaded bushing that is at the end of the gun that the welding wire runs through. As the welding wire goes through it friction will wear out the size of the hole in the bushing. Depending on how much you weld will determine how often you need to change the tips. I change mine when they start acting up. ie the hole gets very large or the wire will begin to get caught/weld to the tip. This will happen every couple of months or so. Not to bad really. You will spend more $ on wire and shielding gas than anything else. A 10 lb spool of wire is around $30. Depending on the size of your cylinder around $25 up to have them filled. A 10 lb spool of wire lasted me a little over 3 years. that was doing misc govt projects in the garage and building one large heavy smoker. It will all depend on how often that you weld.

In referance to a tig welder. Tig welding is by far the HARDEST welding type to do. Tig- Tungsten inert gas. There is a torch with a tungsten electrode in the center and a ceramic cone around the outside to control a shielding gas. Typicaly 25% Co2 and 75% argon mix. Different tungsten size and puritys for different applications. Ie stainless ,mild steel, and aluminum. Then there in a foot pedal that is used to start, stop and control the amprage when welding. Also a ground clamp is needed as well. The opperator holds the torch next to the material and then pushes the foot pedal to start the arc(in the right hand). More pressure on the pedal will encrease the amprage. Then get a molten puddle in the metal and begin to add filler metal in rod form with the left hand. The welder can control the temp of the weld puddle with the pedal when welding. If the tungsten touches the weld puddle at all the weld must be stopped and the tungsten must be reground on a grinder to clean it up. Otherwise the arc jumps all over and is very dificult to control as well as it will contaminate the weld. There is a lot of hand eye foot coordination going on all at once. Typicaly most tig welding is done sitting at a bench because of the steadyness that is needed from the welder. Yes you can weld in an off position ie standing or over head but it is difficult and takes A LOT OF PRACTICE. Tig also takes much more time to weld versus mig or arc welding because of all of the operator input needed.

With all that being said tig is also by far my favorite to do. It makes an incredable weld bead. Looks and strength. Anyone can run a wire feed welder tig will show you how much welding skill that you have. tig welding is a very presise operation and very clean. There is zero weld spatter because the welder is adding the filler metal manually to the molten puddle and does not have to melt from the top ie mig and arc welding. You can weld mild steel stainless steel aluminum and other exotic metals as well. IE Nickle, chromolly steel, titanium. Tig also allows you to weld very thin metal like down around 26 ga sheet metal. At this thickness you would be fusing the metal together ie melting the edges together to create the weld. It is very strong and will look good. You can go down around 3 amps to do this.

I am mentioning all of this so you do not buy one of these and are not informed of what you are getting into. Looking back I would buy another tig welder in a heart beat. I would recamend taking a class or having someone who knows tig welding teach you to do it though. I took a class at a local tech school to learn. I have a welding background(my dad is a welder) and it still took me the whole 16 weeks of the class to start to get comfortable and put a decent weld together. It will take A LOT OF PRACTICE to get good at it. Also each type of metal has its own charicturistics. Aluminum is in a class all by its self. AC high frequency is required to clean the metal while welding.

If you are up to the challenge by all means go for it. Once you are proficient at tig welding you will be very pleased at the results that you will have. I hope this helps to clarify. Caleb

Sorry to here that. Some people are dinks and are not happy if they are not messing up something for someone else. Keep on looking you will find something. Check out any local welding stores to see if they have any used equipment. Also check and see if they have a repair center. Sometimes it is borderline cost to fix welder versus buying a new one. If you can pick up one that has been fixed or needs to be fixed for reasonable. Just trying to think of any other places that you could find something resonablly priced. Maybe call a welding shop and see if they have any welders they are selling or have collecting dust in the corner. Let me know how it goes. Caleb

You might check your local auctioneers. I've noticed a lot of farmers are now leasing their land for others to work and are auctioning off a lot of their equipment. I've seen a lot of welding gear in these lots while I've been looking for an older full size pickup. Just a thought.

It is so hard to believe this has been so hard to get done.

The guy that has that hobart unit emailed and said he wanted to sell it to me. What I am freeking some is if there seems to be a shortage of USED units then why is this NOT sold yet ??

Also another issue comes to mind.

I will be welding most of the time from my wheel chair.. Is there a blanket or something that can possibly stop the destruction of the chair or do I weld in the rain.

tiznutbrnt, you can buy a welding blanket to cover the chair. I am pretty sure if splatter hits the wheel chair it will stick to it.
Also, I do not recommend welding in the rain.

That is pretty much what I said. Wink You can if you wish but it is not my preferred weather for sticking two pieces of metal together with electricity.

Hhoollyy crap..

A guy emailed me responding to my ad on the list and he has a Lincoln wire feed that he said is about 12 - 15 years old that was stepped on by a heffer that came into the garage.

It was stepped on the top. He said the spool is on the side and should be fine.

Does anyone have any ideas of what this might be..

Do the older one work as good as the newer ??

Oh ya.. He wants it to be FREE..

EDIT AGAIN:
He said it has a CO2 tank also.

Be patient. Keep looking and learning. A good wire feed will turn up.

A TIG machine to weld thick enough steel to make a smoker (3/16 or 1/4"" material) would need more amps than you can get out of your home elecrtrical. Plus it would be painfully slow. 100% Argon for TIG is pretty expensive too.

This is a pretty good deal here. http://store.weldingdepot.com/cgi/weldingdepot/K2788-2.html
It's expensive but it will save you many headaches in the long run.

It will only hold a 10# spool but the bigger ones that will a 40# spool get heavy.

HF sells a pretty good welding blanket. It's burlap but it's cheap enough to replace after you get some holes in it.

Just an FYI, Amazon sells that Hobart Handler 125 NEW with FREE shipping for $289.99. For that price, and for what you want to do, I wouldn't even bother with a used unit.

I think Miller makes the Hobart units. I have one, and have only used it a couple of times. The wire does tend to stick quite a bit more as it's feeding, but I'm an IT/computer guy by trade and, until I bought this unit, had never touched a welder in my life.

After a whole one (1) hr of welding experience Smile I can tell you this - flux core welding sux!!! You will want to invest in the gas conversion kit and use shielding gas for your REAL project work.

My GUESS, and this is strictly a guess, is the HD version will have a higher duty cycle rating (like 20% for the HD versus 10% or 15% for the non-HD).

For $100, depending on how much time you have, and how much ACTUAL welding you'll be doing, I *might* go with one of the low end Harbor Freight units. That way you have some sort of warranty for the same investment.

Once you get a few hrs behind you, upgrade to a GOOD used Miller or new Hobart, depending on your needs and anticipated usage.

I’ve only peeked at this post a little but here’s my advice. a welder is kinda like a woman you can get one as a starter and trade up later but it will cost you so is it better to start things with the one you want to end up with

The Weld Pak "HD" is made for the "Home Depot" to sell. Thus the "HD"!!!
Same unit as the "Power Mig" at Lowes! Same prices at both places.

It is seeming to me that a welder more, MORE powerful than 100 amps is the way to go..

Is that true.
