Hey everyone, I just want to let you guys know how much information I have already absorbed from reading your posts. I really appreciate it. I have noticed that most, if not all, of you seem to be affiliated with KCBS. However, my question is related to a MIM sanctioned contest. Hopefully someone can give me some insight.
I am the chief cook on a new team. This is to be our first competition. We have obtained all the rules and regulations and have practiced cooking all summer. My question is regarding the on-sight judging. I know KCBS does not have onsight judging, but I was hoping someone might know the answer anyway.
When giving the onsight presentation to the judges, is it better to have just one person on the team do all the presenting? Or is it better to break up the presentation among several of the members? My teammates and I are at odds about this. They want to divide the presentation with one person greeting the judge, one person showing off the cooker, another person discussing the meat and it's preparation and so on. I personally feel it would flow much smoother if just one person handled all the presenting. I just feel that we would run the risk of appearing unorganized if we tried to divide it. Anyway, if any of you are familiar with MIM judging and could give me your insight I would very much appreciate it. I just don't want to look like a team of unorganized newbies to the judges. I wish I could have gone to a competition first to see how other teams do it, but we don't have that luxury this time. Sorry this post ended up so long.

Thank you in advance Very Happy

Just a thought, having everyone involved with different aspects of the presentation would show the judges that each member of your team is highly involved with all the entire process, not just a "grunt or gofer".

We are doing our first MIM comp next weekend. It's just me and my dad and I think we may split some up, or he may do shoulders and I may do ribs.

BigTom is the man to ask.

I think you could do it either way and it would be alright.

Either way you decide to do it you shold practice that just as if you are at a competion. Have someone act as a judge and perform the entire routine form start to finish.

This may give you some insight as to which way flows the best.

My $20.00 worth. I mean .02 cents worth. Very Happy Very Happy

We've got a couple of MIM folks in here, hopefully they'll stop by.

Think of it this way, if you gave a presentation at work, how does it work when 5 people present vs. 1? If the judge asks a questions, who answers? You don't want everyone jumping in.

You SHOULD also practice your presentation, whichever way you're going to do it. More people just means a little confusion for the judge.

You want the information to be great, for the visit to flow well.

For me, I'd have the head team member greet them, show them the site, introduce them to the team, etc. You could have a "head cook" take over to discuss the cooking process.

If the problem is everyone wants to talk to the judge, they need to give it up and not let the ego get in the way. It's about the team winning. Let the slickest salesman talk to the judge, but they better know their team, their Q, their methods..

In the end, do what you're comfortable with. Heck, do the dry run thing with the team and film it. I've seen that. Then have a 6 pack of beer laughing at the video.

Key is to make it look well practiced and not have everyone talking over each other.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.
