I have been scouring CL for 6 months now looking for a drum.
Finally found one, for free.

The inside. It looks to be soybean oil that was stored inside it.

The lid has the seal in the groove still, do i need to remove that?
Also do i need to burn the inside paint out?

The biggest thing i need to see is some charcoal baskets. I have expanded metal and a buddy who is a union welder. I want to make the basket super nice and big enough to get those 12 hour burns. So post your pics, Thanks!

You dont need the gasket.
You need to burn the paint out, after the burn ban is lifted.

mine required zero welding but isn't nearly as pretty as most. it does however hold at least 10 pounds of charcoal.

Mine is made from a 17-1/2" weber charcoal grate. The sides are 7" high.

With a 3" dia center tube with vent holes and 2 1/4" plate baffles.

I built this one for Necron99, it does not have legs as it was for his upright.

Here is Mrs.K.A.M.'s sitting on its Dolley.

I can send the file to anyone who wants the CAD design for the bottom of my basket. It can easily be turned into a cutting program for a torch/plasma/waterjet/laser cutting machine...lemme know if yoU want it.

peace

That's a sweet base 12th AV! At first I thought it was one of those $90 cast iron kettle grates I want so bad! How hard would id be to adjust your cad design to cut a grate for the kettle?

Oh yeah, I almost forgot OS, what the hell are you waiting for!? Burn the thing out ("What burn ban officer?" or "Ok, I'll put the fire out when you arrest the meth dealers down the street"), put it together, and get to cooking! 3(?)year olds and not quite 1(?) year olds are great helpers! Laughing

We used to have meth dealers directly across the street. I have a few friends in the sheriff dept. who said they were well aware of what was going on over there. they were "building a case!" Shocked Rolling Eyes
Finally they got forclosed on and it only took six months after that to get them out! That was three years ago. Finally last week we saw that one of the people got arrested Very Happy

Good luck with your battle...

Thanks! The 3 year old is a good helper.
I told the wife i will be busy next weekend building it, this week i am collecting the parts and putting together the plan.

As to meth house, i have been told that they are well aware of it and its actually connected to another meth house about 6 miles away. They are building a case, and they do drive into the cul-de-sac at least once a day. The damn place has caused me more grief than the f**kers are worth. But we seem to be the only ones in the neighborhood willing to stand our ground with the azzes.

I sure hope they build a case quicker in Oregon, than they do here Confused !

My three year old loves to help, but REALLY doesn't like noise, so it gets a little tricky...
She doesn't even like chucky cheese 'cause it's to loud! Laughing

I am pretty sure they do. And Thankfully!
We also have some other things playing in our favor. State employees that run plates and can make phone calls are super duper to have on your side.

Anyways back to the topic.
That grill bottom that 12th Ave made is pretty frickin slick, if i had the resource's on hand to do it i would have one cut. But to no avail, i only have a super tight welding buddy. He has yet to get back to me about doing the charcoal basket but once i corner him with a few #'s of Q he will do it, always has. Wink

I put mine together with no welding experience. For my charcoal basket I got a drop of expanded metal for $4 from a machine shop, welded two cooking grates from an old cheap no good water smoker together(perpindicular), 3 3" bolts down to an old pizza pan that collects the ash. She ain't pretty, but works! Just wish I would have put a handle on it, all my shirts have a black grease smiley face over the belly Laughing

Like I said, she aint purty! Laughing

Couple things I learned...Don't try to weld stainless to your drum, looks like crap. This is a real good system for a thermo, this turkey frying one works great (Thanks K.A.M.!)

Also, don't try to weld brass to your drum, looks like crap and doesn't hold. If you are not using magnets or some other system, I have one of these

and three of these

I moslty cook with only the ball valve, but on bigger cooks or chicken, I can take off a cap or two also.

Ok.
I burned the thing out Thursday night.
Actually had coals still burning 24 hours later.
It looks like the liner is still in it. Only burned off in few spots. I dont have the money for it to be blasted.
I really dont want to have to go the wire brush route. So does anyone have some bright ideas to get the damn liner out?
I used a whole chit load of maple for the fire. You couldnt within 10' of the barrel while it was burning it was so damn hot.

Did you burn the lid too? That will help hold more heat in the barrel.

The fire would choke back pretty good with the lid on it. But i did burn the lid off. Got it positioned standing up between a couple of pieces of wood for a few hours.
