I know that many of you here are blues enthusiasts as well as Qheads. I am looking to get some input on blues artists. I don't know a thing about Blues, however every now and then I'll hear a tune that I really like. Since nobody I know really listens to blues, it's usually in a public place where there isn't anybody to ask who it is. When I tried looking up blues on the internet I haven't really found any music that I like consistently. Usually one or two songs I like and the rest are just so-so.
I'm hoping to be schooled here. As somebody that's interested in learning just how great blues can be, who are the artists that I should check out? Any favorite albums that I may enjoy start to finish? I'm looking for something that I can throw on as background music when I'm smoking/cooking/cleaning/working on cars that I won't have to skip tracks on, so good records start to finish is key. New or old doesn't matter too much, as it'll all be new to me.
Thanks in advance for the input. _________________ UDS

Figure out what which genre of blues you are really into. Delta blue, Chicago blues, Texas blues, Memphis blues, Swamp blues, British blues, etc. Then google/youtube a certain genre and go from there.
Or start listening to Eric Clapton and slowly dive deeper and deeper into the blues like I did. He was deffinately my gateway drug. His unplugged album is what got me hooked.
Here is a list of "big time" musicians to check out:
Buddy Guy - greatest guitar player alive
Muddy Waters - rock and roll wouldn't be where it is today without him
Howlin’ Wolf
John Lee Hooker - amazing guitar playing
Eric Clapton
Robert Cray
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Son House - major influence of MUddy Waters and Robert Johnson
Junior Wells
Robert Cray
BB King
Johnny Winter
Robert Johnson - GREATEST GUITAR PLAYER EVER. EVER.
Bo Diddly
Chuck Berry
David “Honeyboy” Edwards - used to play with Robert Johnson
Fats Domino
Guitar Shorty
Leadbelly
Lighting Hopkins
Little Walter
Willie Dixon
Etta James
Bessie Smith
Charlie Patton - "Father of the Delta Blues"
I'm sure i've missed some, but whatever. Listen to more than one song from more than one album because some blues musicians often changed their sound to try and sell records because they didn't make much money.
Feel free to PM me, more than half of my 12,000+ songs on my ipod are blues. Once you get into it, you realize that blues was very influential to all the great rock and roll bands. Especially Zeppelin. _________________ Kids call me paycheck, 'cause i'm so money.

I'd definitely add Roy Buchanan and Elvin Bishop to the list.
There is a syndicated radio blues program called "Smokestack Lightnin'" that plays Saturday evenings. A lot of college stations and smaller town stations subscribe to it. Browse around the dial.

Here's the list of artists that I enjoyed:
Buddy Guy
Eric Clapton
Johnny Winter
Chuck Berry
Fats Domino
Leadbelly
Joe Bonamassa
Kenny Wayne Shepherd
Keb' Mo'
Albert Collins
Charlie Musselwhite
I really appreciate the suggestions. I tend to like the music that's a bit more upbeat. Some of these guys I've heard of and Clapton I've listened to before, but most are brand new to me. Buddy Guy's Pandora channel is already one of my favorites. _________________ UDS

I was going to suggest Pandora. You may also try last.fm. It is pretty much teh same deal, where you input an artist or song, and it gives you some variety of similar music. That is how I find most of mine. I listen while I am at work, and when I find one I like, I write down the artist. I can investigate it further when I get home.
You can also search myspace music for blues within a geographical area. It will return results of independant and signed bands. I like to feel like I have found a gem that nobody else knows about.
On the more contemporary side if things you might like:
Joe Bonamassa
Walter Trout
Kenny Wayne Sheppard
Too Slim and The tail Draggers
If you want more I can PM you a large list of ones I have written down.

That's funny, I've been listening to the Buddy Guy channel on my phone at work all week. Buddy Guy is my favorite. I've seen him 3 times the past few years. If he ever comes to town, go see him. You won't be disappointed _________________ Kids call me paycheck, 'cause i'm so money.

Don't beat me up too much.
I know they are not traditional blues but Blood, Sweat and Tears has some good "blues like" tunes.

They have some rocking tunes _________________ Electricity can be dangerous. My nephew tried to stick a penny into a plug. Whoever said a penny doesn't go far didn't see him shoot across that floor. I told him he was grounded. - Tim Allen |

A popular local blues-man in the Boston area is Chris Fitz. His band won best of Boston, and went to Memphis to compete. His Viagra Blues is a hoot.
Derek Trucks band
Susan Tedeski
Are a couple more that may be of interest to you.
You may want to see if you have a local blues society in your area, and check out the local talent. _________________ Brinkman Upright

I just Google mapped your location. Man you got it made. Jump on the Metra and head on in to Chicago. There's a whole pantload of blues clubs and venues. Chicago also hosts the largest blues festival in the world every June (and it's FREE). Use your search engine for "chicago blues " if you haven't already. _________________ I was taught to respect my elders. It's just getting harder to find them.
