Actually, you're supposed to turn on the receiver first, then transmitter.

What wireless thermometer with 2 temperature probes do you recommend for $100?

That is a single probe, which you must open the lid to take a temp, and of course it's not wireless. It's a nice thermometer, but it fails to meet any of the design parameters except the price.

Teleking has suggested that there is a wireless, two-probe thermometer that runs about $100 which is a viable alternative to the Maverick. As soon as he posts back, I'll buy one because this is exactly what I'm looking for.

And again, you go find the find the $100 wireless dual probe.
What i posted is what was suggested, and exactly what Teleking and others will suggest. If you dont like it, dont buy it. This is not the first time this has been discussed, IIRC it happens every 2-3 months. Either step up and use that probe, or step up to the $250-300 range and get one of the units that has fans which can be controlled from your 'puter.

You would think that with some of the smart azzes here one of you would put your wit together and design a mid range, mid priced, dual wireless probe.

Seems like with the ET-73 you either get a good one or it's s--t right out of the box. I have never had any problems with mine in nearly a year of use.

Do I like everything about it? No. For instance, why is the lowest setting for the alarm on the food side 170something°? I'd like it to alert me when the temp reaches 160° but that can't happen. I also expect the probes to need replacing every now and then. No big deal.

Meh, it is what it is.

I've got the big green egg branded one. I have used it on about 10 over night smokes thus far and its worked like a charm. It really isn't hard to program. I also have the receiver inside the house about 10-15 yards away and also take it to bed which is about 20 yards away and it has no problem keeping the signal. I always change the triple AAAs every 3 or 4 overnight (14-18 hour) smokes.

There's been one instance where the alarm went off when the smoker went out of range and I couldn't make it stop after I adjusted the temp so I just yanked out the battery and reset it.

If you are doing long over night smokes, it defnitely makes life a ton easier.

I use it for my pork ternderloins as well.

Well then, you should be very be glad to read that you got that wrong! Laughing

From the Maverick ET-73 user's manual:

Setting HI (Maximum) Food Temperature
1. Press and hold LIGHT/MODE for 2 seconds to select thermometer mode. The LCD will show a FOOD icon in the upper part of the display and a SMOKER icon in the lower part of the display.
2. Press HI/CLEAR to display the maximum food temperature value. The value will only be displayed for 5 seconds. The default setting from the factory is 176°F. The range is 32°F - 392°F.
3. Press and hold HI/CLEAR so maximum food temperature flashes.
4. Press HI/CLEAR repeatedly until your desired temperature is displayed.
5. Press LIGHT/MODE to confirm setting.

There's a whole lot of other, important operational stuff that can be found by reading the manual...

Cheers!

Q: "What's your favorite cut of pork under $30?"
A: "Beef Brisket Packer. And lots of people eat them."

Rolling Eyes

Anyway...We really wanted to if Teleking was going to provide an answer that actually fit the criteria of the question. Delusional? Of course! Wink

Cheers!

Yep, you're right. Smile

And I can get to 160° with only 168 presses of the button! Cool

I think I'll just set my high range at finished temp and watch it climb to 160°. Laughing

How does my solution not fit the OP? Pit probe for cooking chamber and run a 12" stem thermo through the lid and into the food. Use listed product to view the temps up to 100 yards away.

There you have it, a dual remote probe to monitor pit temp and food temp (for some unkown reason) Wink

Usually I just let this kind of catering forum nonsense slide and chalk it up to humor, but really: A Thermapen? Binoculars? *sigh*

If I had the technical know how, I'd put my mind to work on a $100 remote thermometer that isn't a piece of junk.

Sometime last year I wrote up a review of the ET-73 and believe me there were plenty of "curious" (even "awful") engineering decisions made that I wrote up. The default temps, outlandish range for the food channel, lack of a decrement mode for the settings, the fact it has to be set up every freakin' time it's used, etc, etc.

All of it is true - and that doesn't even address the obviously high infant mortality rate (the bin in which I'd include severely range-limited units, because mine works for at least 50 feet plus shooting through 2 to 3 walls at that range).

But even after all that, I've yet to see anything that touches it for specific functionality (and good probes - the single internal conductor steel jacket wires are about the best you'll find in a consumer thermometer) in the under-$50 price range.

fwiw, if you press and hold the same button, after a couple/few seconds it will increment rapidly. It'll still take a good 20-30 seconds to wrap around and back to a useful setting, but at least you won't develop arthritis from 400+ thumb presses Wink

Cheers!

Hmm Confused I must have missed where you had already posted that "solution" - in this (or any) thread - I was probably still laughing about the binocular "solution" Laughing

Anyway, I recognize you actually never claimed you knew of a true dual channel remote thermometer system for use with a smoker that was under $100 and superior to the ET-73 Wink

As for the dual, long stem thermometer solution, you might be able to get that to work for you, but it doesn't sound like a practical solution for everyone's need...

Cheers!

What you didn’t think I’d come up with a solution? Ha - the set up is brilliant and has 3X the range of any remote.

End of the day not my money - enjoy. Still trying to figure out how to give mine away and provide some fun.

feldon30 wrote:
As for the Maverick, unfortunately there is no mass-produced, two-probe, wireless thermometer that's worth a crap. So we're stuck with the Maverick

Couldn’t have said it better myself, and yet people seem to recommend them on a daily basis.

Cheers
