I was wondering how many people here make their own rubs and sauces, and how purchase them.
I usually make my own, since I'm pretty picky about my own food, but I keep a couple of spice rubs around for things I don't make enough to really understand an make my own, like tikka boti and jerk. |

I always make my own rub, no exceptions.
I prefer to make my own sauce, but occasionally time and the size of the cook get in the way of that. That's when I play doctor on a commercial sauce. _________________ Gunny 3073/4044/8411

i use alot of store bought rubs and sauces. very seldom do i leave them as they come out of the package though, i always have to "adjust" them to my taste and that can vary from day to day.
i was on the kick of making BBQ sauce for a while. i had one i really liked and everyone raved on. one day at the store i grabbed a bottle of sauce because i was in a hurry and low and behold it was almost the same as mine. so now it saves me time i just buy it instead of standing there stirring sauce all day.
the sauce was Super Smokers - Tennessee Original flavor. anyone else ever try this? their mustard sauce is real good too. _________________ Im not a proctologist, but I know an asshole when I see one!

I always use my own rubs and sauces for competition, but if it's just family or friends and I don't have time to make sauce I will use one of the three diffrent types of SBR. _________________ Certified grill master of Jacks Old South cooking school (Nov 2009)

Friends and relatives know I BBQ a lot so they are always sending my sauces and rubs...I have a closet full of this stuff I never use. I make and use my own rubs and sauces 90% of the time. I will use something commercial only if Im feeling lazy (But I'm a believer that lazy and BBQ are strange bedfellows) _________________ BBQ is like sex...

I own the recipes to the rubs that are made in a factory which I sell to folks like you.
Sounds like a nursery rhyme. _________________ Ryan Chester

I mix my own rub, and doctor store bought sauce.
I found that to be the most efficient combination.
Cheers,

I make my own rubs. I generally have a pound or two of each on hand. 95% of the time I make my own sauces, whether my own, or from a recipe/cookbook. If I don't have the time, or I'm just being lazy , I'll doctor some storebought stuff _________________ ~Joe

I doubt it because if you tasted it, it wouldn't last long enough to make it to the closet! _________________ Ryan Chester

For competition I buy all my rubs and sauces.
At the house I typically use a store bought bbq seasoning that I like. Use it on everything. Sauce is just a blend of whatever is open in the fridge. |

We are addicted to Big Ron's. My next go to rub is Head Country. I also like their Hickory sauce. If and when Big Ron comes out with a sauce I am sure I will be a loyal customer. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

For Pastrami, I mix my own. For everything else, I might use commercial stuff with this and that added. My homegrown sweet bell paprika is primary ingredient much of the time.

I'm cheap and like to bbq a lot. Commercial rubs get expensive in a hurry for something that is largely salt, sugar, and paprika. I think I can put together more flavorful rubs on my own, best of all, they're cheaper.
For sauce, it depends. A lot of the times my cooks get a doctored kc masterpiece. I'm more than happy to make roxy's mustard sauce. I'm still working on a thin spicy sauce. The closest I've found to that so far is "mr. whitt's sauce" from mike mills book but it needs a little tweaking for my taste buds too. |

I have two bottles of Carolina Mustard and Championship Red in my pantry. The mustard is fantastic. _________________ Char-Griller Smokin Pro

I go back and forth. I will do nothing but homemade for a few months, then for what ever reason i will use commercial stuff for a while. I rarely make or buy the same thing twice, though I am planning more Big Ron's after the Rub Co runs out. _________________ 22.5 Weber Kettle

We mix commercial rubs and we mix commercial sauces to come up with an overall, good end-product. As competitors, adding sweetness to sauce in a KCBS contest hasnt hurt us....yet.

| I have always made my own rub. Just started making sauce and I have an insatiable bug for making sauce now. I will keep buying SBR and Bluefront for my guests that want the norm. |
