Here are the pics of my UDS I built...let me know what ya'll think!!!

new barrel...found it on CL for $20

Burning it out

Me working on the UDS after the burn out...got some helpers too

Me again tryig to get the last of the paint out

One of my helpers!!

Fire basket...I think its a bit too small...gunna build a bugger one soon!!

A look inside

A shot of one of the 3/4 inch gated valves

All painted and ready to go

Since these pics were taken...I've seasoned it and used it a couple of times and learned a few things. First, I need a bigger fire basket. The one I made lasts for about 4 hours. However, I just can't get over how well this things maintains a constent temp!!!

What do you think "Flashback Max"???

Well take a look and any and all comments/suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks for looking!!

Got a question since im thinkin bout building a uds myself. There seems to be a lot of fuss made around here about getting food grade drums. It seems to me the the only difference is the interior paint. By burning them out arent we buring all the "food grade" off? If Im way off here someone stop me before i poison everyone with my used resin drum.

Good looking smoker right there. I don't know if I'd suggest the ABTs. You'll be getting requests for them every time you fire up your cooker. Very Happy

I think the fuss is that many people are paranoid about having toxic chemicals previously in the drum. A food grade drum likely had a food product in it. But if you're planning on doing no prep whatsoever and cooking out of a "raw" drum, that is the only time it should matter. Heating up the toxic residue and resulting off-gassing.

However, since a "burn-out" is usually performed to remove inside as well as outside paint, what diifference does it make what was in it previously? The smoking fumes from the paint are toxic as well, right?

If you can get a non-food grade drum with bare metal inside, that isn't rusted through, there is a lot less work to do.
