Give a try at Home Team BBQ over on Ashley River Road. Not classic Carolina bbq, but about the best you'll find around Charleston.

For the "local" mustard based stuff you can try either Melvin's on James Island or Mt.P.......or you can try Bessinger's BBQ over on Savannah Hwy (17S.). There are a few other places scattered around the area, but none of them are worth the trip.

There's also JB's Smokeshack over on John's Island (Maybank Hwy). They are open on the weekends and alot of people like it. I've never been so I can not comment. They are also the closest place to where you'll be.

Enjoy Kiawah!

Don't want to hijack the string, but I drove a Jeep safari on Kiawah back in the late 70s when only 1/3 of the island was developed. I agree with the "heaven on earth" statement. There was only one golf course at the time and it was like Cumberland Island. Oh to be home again!

Gotta say but Melvin was not a good experience went there with the whole family and 50% of what we ordered remained untouched..... my 12 yo said Dad your ribs are 100% better than this !!! and she left half rack on the table.... rubbery, close to be tasteless.
We drove by JB's Smokeshack several times I was tempted but didn't look like it was a place to bring whole family.
Any way enjoyed Kiawah wish we could afford to go there more often

LOL. Should have prepared you for JB's. Looks like a dive for sure. Like I said, I've not been but people say it's good food.

I'm no fan of Melvin's either. I suggested that because people rave about the Bessinger family bbq...I, personally, am not impressed. You are dead on. They don't use seasoning except to smother everything with their mediocre mustard sauce. Alot of folks like to try the local stuff...and that's pretty much what you got.

Glad you otherwise enjoyed your vacation.
