ill be travelling crosscountry from manitou springs colorado to philadelphia pennsylvania via route 70 the first week of july. as it passes through some of the best bbq areas in the country like kansas and missouri, i was hoping that id be able to plan out an itinerary of bbq joints to hit on my way. any place to hit, or avoid that are fairly close to 70? _________________ "Sam" the Big Green Egg

| Ok if it was me if you have the time driving by Kansas City it's a little off of 70 would take an extra 30 min or so but 1 choice would be Oklahoma Joes. If you want to stay close to 70 then you have Gates it's an experience in itself I personally like Zarda's off of 7 hwy in Blue Springs Mo just outside KC fast easy in and out great place to eat. And then if you make it to columbia mo then try hitting up Buckinhams it's a little off the highway but well worth the drive. |

Haven't looked at a map, but Mike Mill's 17th Street Bar and Grill has a few locations in southern Illinois. From all I have read, stopping in there would be like a trip to Mecca. _________________ 22.5" Weber Grill

I wish I woulda known you were gonna be staying in Columbia! I would have treated you to lunch at my BBQ place and invited you into my pit area as well. You can see I-70 from our joint. Maybe next time. _________________ Reverse flow smoker made by my dad "Shotgun Pete" Peters over 30 years ago!

Do not even think of passing on Oklahoma Joe's in K.C.!!! Likely best Q on the planet! Amazing fries too!
Also, check out Three Little Pigs in Crown Center (K.C.). Owned by eight time American Royal BBQ Championship winner Chris Marks.
Have heard good reviews of Munchin' Hogs at the Hilton at the airport Hilton Hotel. |

Route 70 ends at 695, West of Baltimore. About a mile before it ends, as the mall is in your left window, out your right window, you'll go over Rolling Rd. Right there below you is the pit beef place that has drawn myself and several coworkers to it for about 12 years. It's no frills, and delicious.
If you're in the same basic area, and want true Q, then seek out the Pig Picker off Rte 40 in Ellicott City. There's a second one off Liberty Rte, which is the next exit up from 70 on the Baltimore Beltway. I've had many a pleasant meal there.
Then there's Andy Nelson's, which is off 83 on York Rd. about 4 miles after you leave the Beltway. I've heard nothing but good things about it, though confess to never having been there myself. |
