Hey guys,

Im Steve from NY. I have long LOVED BBQ. Only until recently have I ventured into trying to smoke my own food, and not just goto a restaurant. So I guess I'm what you would call a newbie. Very Happy I hope to learn all there is to learn about doing this correctly, and turning out good BBQ.

Steve

Let me be the first to say welcome to the ring! Lots of really great guys here that are good at answering questions. Ask a lot of questions, but the only way to get good at it is practice practice practice. You don't have to spend a lot of $ either. Wal-Mart as well as your local Lowes, or Home depot will have the cheep Brinkmann charcoal smoker for as little as $57. It is a good place to start if you don't want to spend a lot. If budget is not a problem the Webber Smokey Mountain seems to be a favorite usually goes for around $200-250. No matter which you pick it just takes practice! So dive on in and get smokin'!

When I think Syracuse and BBQ I think Dinosaur. I'm sure you have been there. That place is great. I'm from Orange County, NY so I am about 3 hours Southeast of there. I have some friends who went to school up that way and we went to Dinos any chance we could.

I grew up between Albany and Syracuse and have to admit I didn't know what Dinosaurs was until we moved to VA and I got into que. In our area Brooks BBQ (out of Oneonta) was the standard..........and while they do use charcoal in an open pit, it is not typical bbq by any means.

I cut my teeth at Brooks as a student at SUNY Delhi, up over the mountain from there. As far as "typical" goes, that's hard to say. Q can be a whole lot, mostly good, and Brooks is up there, even to this day. I would put it in the hot smoke/grill catagory if there was such a place, but for central NY back in 1966 it was hands down different than anything any of us had ever imagined. I can remember my Dad grilling on a contraption that would vaporize aluminum foil!!

Nice thing about Brooks is their consistancy and great flavor in the rub/sauce and prep. They still have the same set up and still cater church, 4H, school, and other events. As a great eatery you are right on mding, they are not typical. K_C

ya know Dinger I was on that same schedule for a few years it seems. I had a distinguished career w/ NYS DEC and had a project the brought me thru there on Mondays. Really ticked me that they were always closed.

I gotta say that the smokie air outside that place got me into my first baby weber years ago. Finally got a SnP few months back. Gonna post my mods as soon as I figure out getting the pics up.
