Don't know if being bored is the right term, maybe just nothing better to do is the right one. Following someone else's idea, a successful delivery was made.
Started with a Smokey Joe Grill
Made a charcoal basket
Found a 15 gallon drum
and wala a baby UDS!
Got an 8# butt just waiting to hop in tomorrow. _________________ Homemade 24" X60" offset

Looks good to me, you may have probs on long cooks though. Refuel during the cook.
Fire that bad boy up and show up some pics. _________________ Gunny 3073/4044/8411

Got up at 3 AM, injected the butt with apple juice and Bad Byron's Butt Rub, slathered the outside with yellow mustard and a good coating of BBBR and put it on the smoker. Filled the basket with about 10# of charcoal and hickory chunks and added 10-12 lit coals. Was going to check it in 30 minutes for temp but fell asleep for about 3 hours. Checked and it was running at 180. Made a couple of adjustments and it crusied at 225-250 for the next 10 hours. Pull at 195 after 13.5 hours. I was curious to see how much charcoal I used so I pulled the basket and doused the coals. I was surprised to see I only used about half of the charcoal. Real efficient to use when only cooking one butt. Made some dagon tongues but they vanished into thin air.

That is cute! Love it.
Is the drum sitting ontop of the Smokey Joe? Hard to tell from the pic. |

Simply took a Smokey Joe Grill, took out the original charcoal grate and replaced it with a 10.5" diameter by 9" high basket. Used the cooking grate for inside the drum. The drum just sets on top of the bottom part of the grill. Can convert back to a charcoal grill in about 20 seconds and vise versa. _________________ Homemade 24" X60" offset

Mafman, thanks for the complements. It wouldn't have tasted as good if you didn't introduce me to Bad Byron's Butt Rub. Definately will be adding it to my arsenal. Thanks again. _________________ Homemade 24" X60" offset

I modified an old smokey joe I had laying around too. Currently I have parts being welded to convert a 22-1/2 weber kettle into the same thing. I went about things a bit differently than what you did but same principle. Once I get the pieces, should be tomorrow, I'll post some pics. I have a feeling this thing is going to be awesome. _________________ In the shadows of Lambeau |

A word of caution when building. I only cut out the bottom of the drum and not the crimp ring. When you set the drum on the Smokey Joe base its not the best fit. I entertained cutting off the crimp ring but decided not to for the first burn. Good decission. The intake vents on the base get covered real quickly with ashes and the less than perfect fit between the drum and base acts as the air intake. I used the adjustment in the lid to control temp. Tthe less than perfect fit allows the drum to wooble a little in the base but nothing overly concerning. _________________ Homemade 24" X60" offset

Just curious if you have had or solved problem with ash blocking the lower inlets? Dropping bits of coals tend to clog it.
Yours looks an awful lot like mine!

Very cool, I just can't find a 35G drum anywhere. There are only two of us so this would be great size. I will have to keep an eye out for one.
What's dagon tongues? I could not find them with a search. |
