According to Yahoo news, Sweet Baby Rays original BBQ sauce won a blind taste test as the best BBQ sauce. It beat out 22 other competitors. KC Masterpiece original came in second. My personal favorite Head and Country wasn't even mentioned.

I like Sweet Baby Rays and Stubbs. I would say Stubbs is my favorite and the one to beat.

"Another compared it to what he admitted to be his favorite sauce of all: "The taste is similar to the McDonald's version, but this thickness and tomato purée–like consistency is what their sauce should aspire to be."

My favorite line from this farce!!! Confused

Makes you wonder who the judges were. Comparing it to Mcdonalds. Who would of thunk.

McDonalds and barbeque should never be used together. Neither should Burger King and ribs.

There's a lesson in this. No matter how we--as pit masters--think the perfect BBQ should be (and taking into account all of the various regional styles of BBQ), the average American thinks of BBQ as sauce. And that sauce is mostly sweet. Very sweet, if SBR wins the title.

SWB's is what is bought here most of the time, Carolina treat is second because it has a nice tangy bite ,usually when I use SWB I cut it a little with cidar vinegar.

The last tme I went through a drive through at McDonnalds was to pick up a 59 cent cheeseburger for my Bulldog Gus. He loves them. I won't eat them.

Well stated...that's a good summary of the common American palate (espeically here in the Midwest).

You have been reported to the authorities for animal abuse. Poor dog.

I use SBR's on occasion for a base sauce and then doctor it up, a lot. Wink

I love the SBR 'sweet and spicy" iv tried a lot of different sauces and found its the best combination of both, not too sweet and not too spicy.

What are some common ways too improve on a market brand sauce other than vinegar?

Vinegar, lemons, apple juice, soda, fruit, liquor, herbs, spices, just about anything you can think of. Sometimes i just dont have time to make something from scratch. The wife does some crazy coupon shopping and we always have a bottle or two in the cupboard. Its also easy easy enough to just grab a bottle and add vinegar/juice to cut it down for a thin glaze. YMMV.

I saw this article earlier, and I thought it was laughable. I cannot stand SBR's personally, it's just too sweet.

My favorite commercial sauce is Rudy's original sauce, but it's too spicy for a lot of folks.

What Oregon smoker said.
Got Kraft's Thick and Spicy Original on sale for .29 for the 18 oz. bottle. I can't even make it for that, but I can sure play doctor on it.
AC vinegar and kick it up a notch with some Spice Barn 40K cayenne. Good stuff, even Mikey likes it Exclamation

To me these sauces listed are decent for the average backyard weekend BBQer.

BUT, FOR ME, Im not going to spend 1/2 to all day smoking ribs, brisket , pulled pork etc. + then put liquid smoke on it. Most all the sauces listed are loaded with the stuff.

PS , I do like grilled chicken with the KC masterpiece.

Do you all like putting liquid smoke on your Q?

From the little bit I've seen of bbq comps and sauce recipes from competitions it appears that bbq fans who like bbq enough to go to the trouble of taking a class to judge it also seem to like sweet sauces in very large numbers.

That said I don't think sbr or kc masterpiece are bad sauces. They're not the work of art that roxy's mustard sauce is and if I use them I like to doctor them a bit but if I had to use a sauce straight from the bottle I think they're the top two I'd reach for. Fwiw my kc masterpiece bottle here says less than 2% smoke flavor
